Harvey and Meelo, long-haired miniature dachshunds, are grand-dogs extraordinaire in my opinion. Affectionate, protective, attentive and those eyes and needle noses . . . how can one resist? . . . genetics, schemenetics . . .

call them genetic defect or not, I quote from a famous song about the dachshund:

"most dogs have shapes and proportions all wrong; they're either one way or the other, but dachshunds are both short and long!"

long live the badgerhound!

We got our doxie because my husband had Alzheimer's and we thought he would enjoy her. He certainly did. They were inseparable until he had to move to a nursing home.

I had never lived alone in my life, and my father and then my husband saw that things went well. So when I came home to an empty house, I would have been devastated even more had this little person not been so glad to see me. She is 6 and my very best friend. Sleeps with me, follows me around everywhere I go.

At the vet's after calling out "ROVER SMITH", "LASSIE JONES" and no one lifted a head, when they called out "MEGZIBABY" Swanson" everyone turned to see WHO WOULD GIVE A DOG A NAME LIKE THAT! Although most of the family thought it would be too much for me to care for a dog and such a sick man, ONE GRANDDAUGHER thought it would be great. SHE WAS RIGHT. MEGZIBABY was her first e-mail name and nickname as a baby. Her name is really Megan and just was graduated from law school!!!!!
