Ice Core Secrets Could Reveal Answers to Global Warming

Inside of ice cores from Greenland are trapped environments from 50 thousand years ago

At the Stable Isotope Lab in Boulder, Colo., scientists are doing a lot of the same things that those CSI folks do on TV. But instead of being "crime scene investigators," these experts are more like "cold scene investigators." Geoscientists like lab director Jim White work primarily with one raw material: ancient ice, in the form of ice cores.

The ice cores come from Greenland and Antarctica. And, says White, they hold secrets from thousands of years ago.

"Inside this ice core is trapped the environment from about 50 thousand years ago," said White, showing a two-foot core. "You can see some bubbles in here, that's the atmosphere. We can take this ice core, we can crush it up, we can remove the air that is inside of here, and find out how much C02 (carbon dioxide) is in here; methane and other greenhouse gases were in the atmosphere at the time when this ice core was formed," he said.

Scientists have only been deciphering the pages of these frozen books for about 40 years. The information extracted from this ice could play a critical role in understanding and preparing for any imminent changes to our planet from global warming.

"So it's not just that the past tells us what happened, but the past gives us some clues about what could occur in the future," said White.

White's recent analysis of Greenland ice cores, a National Science Foundation (NSF)-supported project, has revealed some important clues about rapid climate changes at the end of the last ice age, about 11,700 years ago.

The climate changes White has documented unfolded dramatically, in only about five decades.

"So what we saw were changes in temperature of 20 to 30 degrees Fahrenheit, in a human lifetime, and a doubling of snowfall in one or two years. Now what could cause those kinds of changes?" asked White.

The likeliest triggers include ocean circulation, which today keeps northern Europe from being frigid. Atmospheric circulation, like the jet stream, may also have switched patterns. Changes in sea ice, like the dramatic retreat being observed right now in the Arctic, could also have contributed to that warming thousands of years ago.

Besides being able to determine the greenhouse gases in the ancient ice, scientists have another surprising forensic tool.

"There's a thermometer that lurks within the ice," said White. "This particular thermometer is not one that's based on the expansion of a liquid, like mercury thermometers. This one is based on the ratio of heavy hydrogen to light hydrogen. The more heavy hydrogen you have, the warmer the cloud was that had the snow. The less heavy hydrogen, the lighter it was. It's just as good a thermometer," he said.

Most people know little about Greenland and the ice that stretches about two miles below sea level. So why should we care about its ice melting?

"Greenland contains something in the neighborhood of 20 feet of sea-level rise, were the entire Greenland ice sheet to melt," said White.

"And if that land ice goes into the ocean, you'd raise sea level in the neighborhood of 20 feet. That's obviously significant. That would inundate, drown, major cities like Miami, Houston, Oakland, New Orleans. It would be all around the world. So it's important to recognize how much ice is up there," he said.

The "pages" of each ice core are like roadmaps.

"We've learned how to read this book better and better, to extract from it the information that's here," said White.

But unlike those CSI shows, these scientists at the University of Colorado at Boulder's Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research (INSTAAR) don't come up with the answers to current climate change at the end of an hour. There is a lot more to learn, to determine if the situation on Earth right now will play out the same way it did thousands of years ago.

"I would say we're still flying blind when it comes to, 'Is there a rapid change on its way?'" said White.

An erroneous reference to an ice age that ended 15,000 years ago has been removed from this article.

Follow Up On My Michael Jackson Remembrance.

I have written the above Michael Jackson Remembrance almost three weeks ago immediately after his death in June 26, 2009 (?) and published/blog extensively. Since then, there were lottle or no rain in the U. S. especially not in the East Coast compare to constant tunder storms earlier. Heat and drought will worsen and accelerate considerably from now on. My Prophecies are working and the end of the United States is very near.

Death Of Michael Jackson, Global Warming & Religious Event?

Remembrance:

Death Of Michael Jackson, An Environmental and Religious Event?

By: Jordan C. Fan, Prophet of Environment.

(Prologue: I am an excellent remembrance & obituary writer because I am clairvoyant. My Messages could come from the spiritual world.)

After reading this article many of you should agree that this is a fair judgement and remembrance of him. Some people would like to make the death of Michael Jackson a religious event although I, Myself, may or may not be one o those people. I have no doubt that many people would like to make him their god or goddess. I think the term "god or goddess" could be appropriate because Michael Jackson himself may prefer not to identify himself as male or female but a child living in a "Neverland" who would never grow up and never has the needs to have sex. That will exclude him as being "transsexual" which some people have wrongfully accused him to be.

The reason why Michael Jackson was so fond of Elizabeth Taylor was because he wanted tailors to make him clothes that will fit for the "Kings" and Queen of England. This is what made him the "King of Pops."

Sadly, Michael Jackson as a likable and non-aggressive person was caught inside a totally violent and unforgiving society -- The United States of America. This society due to greed have to force him to face the harsh reality of adulthood that Michael would utterly deny. Furthermore, he was trapped in an unresolvable Black and White American racial conflict that White disapproved of him as Black and Black accused him of being too White. While Barack Obama has exploited his status as a person who is both Black and White for personal gain, Michael Jackson wanted to be a cool musician who was neither Black nor White for the good of the world.

Michael Jackson should be more than "cool" but very cold by now. In a way, Jackson may also be an Environmental advocate which everyone of you should also be. It is also ironic that both Farrah Fa(u)cet and Mi(cold) Jackson were gone from Los Angeles on the same day. It is My Revelation that Los Angeles and the rest of California even the entire the United States will be extremely hot and dry now to the point of un-inhabitable. It is not only due to Global Warming but also due to their departures.

We should not measure the wealth of a planet by its cash flow. Rather, it should be based on its cultural and artistic heritages. When people of great talents were gone, our world will become much poorer. From now on there will not be any more Michael & Microphone.

(Epilogue:

Simply because some people don't want some disasters to happen, it doesn't mean that they will not happen. There are theology that some people wish they are not true but it doesn't mean they are not the truth. Those things you people have dreamt up are only your unproven hopes and empty wishes which will never become a reality. Being skeptics will only accelerate the demise of this planet and its population.)

cap and rob

one thing all the information agrees on it was ones a lot hotter and at one time a lot colder and humans were not around to cause it climate change was there before us it will be around wile we are here and it may be the end of us someday but it fits in with a way to create fear and make a lot of money the last bunch had there oil wells this bunch uses so called green energy but what they have in common is money for big oil saying they are running low so they can charge 5 dollars a gallon and the green energy company's who tell you that pay up or die by terrible climate change story's that change every week they both want to control you who will win. my guess we will lose does not matter who wins
