Here is perhaps the best approach of all for leaving absolutely no carbon footprint during you luxury travel: Bike to your luxury eco-resort or stay home. Flying via commercial jet will not be offset by having your sheets changed every other day.

With all due respect to the last post, we're quite proud of what we started at Orbitz Worldwide with http://eco.orbitz.com.

We want our customers to know that we're in it to make the travel & tourism industry a greener place. We encourage every travel company to follow our leadership in the tourism industry and applaud our colleagues when they embrace sustainable travel & tourism practices.

Our commitment to greener travels is why Orbitz partnered with Carbonfund.org. It is why we built a search tool that empowers our customers with the ability to directly access hybrid vehicles at http://hybrids.orbitz.com. That is why our content partners at www.away.com provide top-of-the-line editorial to enrich our eco-site.

Since this article went to print, Orbitz launched a partnership with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to promote ENERGY STAR® rated hotels. See this press release link for more information: http://pressroom.orbitz.com/index.php?s=43&item=652.

Promoting the ENERGY STAR® hotel program is a step towards achieving our goal of international uniformity in rating eco-friendly hotels and lodging. And we continue to encourage industry discussions that will hopefully lead to widely accepted standards and oversight. Until that day comes, we will continue to celebrate suppliers who take action on their own to get green, be it through small steps or large.

More to come - so keep coming back to Orbitz!

There is, in fact a website who provides an actual Green Score ratings system for hotels. It is called RezHub.com. They grade hotels based on the ways the care for the planet and hotels recieve 1 - 5 Green Branches based on the programs they incorporate. Hotels earn points for things like recycling, using alternative energy, even offering organic food. The site is leaps and bounds ahead of the Eco Orbitz site.
