Global Cooling

Questionable science now prevails the public airwaves and press. Global warming is primarily part of natural cyclical changes - the degree human activities may contribute has not been authoritatively quantified in the context of natural events. When all air traffic was suspended for 3 days over the U.S. airspace after 9/11, the elimination of jet engine contrails and particulates reportedly resulted in a 3 degree F reduction in air temperature due to reflected sunlight at higher altitudes. But then, maybe the temperature just happened to dip for 3 days as it does regularly. What's real? What about superhot volcanic vents that regularly spew super heated water and methane? How much more does that serve to heat up the oceans than driving our vehicles (whose particulates may also serve to cool the air - thus offsetting global warming?). We really don't know enough to declare man is responsible for global warming - or cooling for that matter.

Climate changes with or without us

Another one of those alarmist stories based on pure fantasy.

Newsflash: Ocean waters have cooled since 3,000 ocean based robots

started to send their measurements to satellites. What a head scratcher....

Global Warming stopped in 1998 and according to the latest scientific peer reviewed papers from University of Leipzig, Germany, Global Warming will halt until at least 2015, perhaps longer.

All warming between 1978 and 1998 that caused all the hysteria was wiped out in one swoop between Jan 2007 and Jan 2008. There you go.

Global Warming is now called Climate Change as you can conveniently go either way with that term.

Climate has changed for 4.5 billion years and will continue to do so, with or without wisdom from Al Gore, Prince Charles or that other Climate Specialists, high school drop-outs Leonardo Di Caprio and Cameron Diaz.

Man cannot regulate nature

The author appears to advocate that humans start regulating nature - forcing its behaviour to stay within certain prescribed control limits in order to preserve the current status quo. This is absurd. One ant cannot stop a herd of stampeding elephants.

"Less ice means more water." Well, ice is water, and it doesn't mean sea rise. The Arctic melted several times during the 20thC and sea levels were less than they are today; the Arctic floats on water so when it melts it will not displace further. In any event NASA regards the Arctic melts as natural events. The Antarctica will not melt; even if surrounding waters do heat up evaporative pickup from the ocean will deposit the water on the ice pack where it will impact; the recent ice split event on the Western penninsula was due to the extent of ice-growth and eddy effects from the ocean. The state of glacier growth and retardation throughout the world is a mixed bag with glaciers in South America and Africa growing and some in the northern hemisphere retreating; there will be no substantial ocean pick-up from that source.

And another thing

Venice doesn't have a problem with rising sea water. In fact due to it's situation, Venice has one of the longest and most accurate records of sea level in the world.

Currently, the city of Venice is experiencing a 14 year low for sea level (it's important for them to keep track because they rely upon gondola ambulance service, and sometimes waning seas leave rescue routes impassible).

That's two aspects which are just plain wrong. USN&WR's reputation is taking a beating with this story.

You really should print a retraction.

Papertiger

Now hold on a minute.

Kilimanjaro's ice has been slowly sublimating since 1850, that's about a hundred years before the invention of cars and the ramping up of co2 production by human beings. Besides that it couldn't be due to any change in temperature because the peak of the mountain is at 19,000 feet. The temperature there never climbs high enough to melt snow or ice. You should remove the segment of your story or print a retraction because it is deceiving to claim that Kilimanjaro's ice is receeding due to human causes.

Your not meaning to deceive people, are you?

Change

Isn't it a bit curious, that we are all aware that meteorologists with all of their fancy training, computer simulations, and elaborate models can't even predict local weather accurately more than ten days in the future, but due to constant repetition by the media, the general public has been convinced that man is responsible for global warning, without benefit of systematic study, and definitive objective empirical data subject to rigorous peer review to prove it. The earth has gone through dramatic heating and cooling. North America was once a tropical swamp inhabited by dinosaurs, and the same North America was covered by glaciers which carved the finger lakes. These were dramatic changes of over 100 degrees F long before man had any significant population and thus possible systematic effect. Does it need further study, YES!!!! Does man need to be responsible and use his resources responsibly...YES!!! Does this need to start on an individual basis by a wasteful American society which live in over sized houses, drive gas guzzling SUVs, and consume more resources per person...YES!!! Will it happen? Not when driven by short sighted politicians who are more concerned by sound bites and re-election rather than developing balanced budgets that represent commitment to worthy goals, and who have robbed Social Security and Medicare, mortgaging our children's future, because of pork barrel spending and undue influence due to special interest groups. Do you know how to tell when a politician is lying....their lips are moving!

Great article

Thoughtfully written and with a refreshing, positive perspective.

This author is great! I'm looking forward to hearing more from him.

More people have to be mindful of the environmental damage we do on a daily basis - all of which add to our global problems.

By the way, are any pictures from this places the author has obviously visited?
