Velma Barfield was convicted in 1978 of poisoning several members of her family. She was the first woman to be executed in the U.S. after the 1976 resumption of capital punishment. She was killed by lethal injection on Nov. 2, 1984, in North Carolina at the age of 52.
Wanda Jean Allen was convicted in the murder of her lesbian lover in 1988. She was the first black woman to be executed since 1954 when she was killed by lethal injection at the age of 41 on January 11, 2001, in Oklahoma.
Teresa Lewis was convicted of trading sex and money in the hired killings of her husband and stepson in October 2002. She was executed by lethal injection at the age of 41 on Sept. 23, 2010, in Virginia.
