National Zoo: Giant Panda Mei Xiang Gives Birth
1 of 10
Closed signs mark the panda exhibit at the National Zoo after the zoo’s female giant panda gave birth to a cub. The zoo staff has yet to see the new cub because Mei Xiang has built a large nest in her den.
Panda keeper Laurie Perry carries Tai Shan, a giant panda cub, out for the cameras during The Smithsonian National Zoological Park's preview of the cub on November 29, 2005. Tai Shan was the sixth panda cub born at the National Zoo and the first cub for Mei Xiang.
Tai Shan, one of the Smithsonian National Zoo's giant pandas, is loaded aboard a plane in a specially designed crate to fly directly to Chengdu, China, under a prior arrangement to participate in the panda conservation and breeding program.
