The Danger of Blame on Boston, Benghazi and the Cleveland Kidnappings
Tweet Share on Facebook May 10, 2013 CommentAfter any tragedy, there is a rush to figure out what went wrong – how it could have been prevented, what signs or signals were missed. It's a painful but very necessary exercise, since (as my parents repeatedly reminded me during my childhood) failure is an impetus for learning.

CNN's Sex-Crazed Amanda Knox Case Interview
Tweet Share on Facebook May 9, 2013 CommentMemo to Chris Cuomo: No means no.
It seems the CNN interviewer still hasn't figured out that the idea that women really mean yes when they say no is simply untrue. And while the admonition is generally applied to a situation where a woman is declining sex, in Cuomo's case, it's a situation in which the interviewer simply refused to accept that accused murderer Amanda Knox is not some "deviant," sex-crazed "freak."

Report Finds Military Sexual Assault Still a Huge Problem
Tweet Share on Facebook May 8, 2013 CommentAn Air Force Lieutenant Colonel was charged this week with sexual battery for allegedly assaulting a woman in a parking lot, grabbing the civilian woman by her breasts and buttocks. That, tragically, is not at all an unusual occurrence in a U.S. military that has done little to stem sexual harassment and assault of its own female members.

Boston Bomber Tamerlan Tsarnaev Deserves a Proper Burial
Tweet Share on Facebook May 6, 2013 CommentOf all the heroism we've witnessed in the Boston Marathon bombing and its aftermath, that displayed by funeral director Peter Stefan doesn't rank among the brave behavior shown by first responders and the runners who helped their fallen competitors. But Stefan's quiet, determined commitment to American values deserves to be lauded nonetheless.

Google's Geeky Glass Is Technology at Its Laziest
Tweet Share on Facebook May 3, 2013 CommentWhen I was a kid, we had this idea that when we were grown – certainly, by the 21st century – we'd all be traveling on moving sidewalks and getting around town with little jetpacks attached to our backs. There were two bases for this fantasy. One, we were all watching way too many episodes of "The Jetsons," and two, we assumed, as many people still do, that technology would continue to develop at a constant pace and that new technology is always a good thing.

Republican Obstruction of Obama Won't Halt Social Change
Tweet Share on Facebook May 2, 2013 CommentPolitics isn't supposed to be personal. It gets that way, of course, particularly in the heat of the waning weeks of a campaign, when candidates throw all sorts of personal (euphemistically called "character") accusations against each other. But once the candidates get into office, there is a reasonable expectation that they will make decisions based on their own judgment, on the desires of their constituents or even according to the demands of special interest groups that have successfully pressured or intimidated lawmakers.

Young Voters Want Less Gun Control
Tweet Share on Facebook May 1, 2013 CommentYoung people have helped push the gay marriage issue to the forefront, with so many voters 30 and under supporting marriage equality that Republicans have been forced to accept – or at least re-examine – the matter. Sticking to an anti-gay rights agenda could cost the GOP votes down the road, and many Republicans are wisely seeing that on a purely political basis, things need to change.

Jason Collins Coming Out as Gay Can Change Sports for the Better
Tweet Share on Facebook April 30, 2013 CommentWe have had gay members of Congress, one of whom was a powerful committee chairman and got married while still serving in office. We have a gay senator and even, for the first time, an openly bisexual member of the House. We have gay star newscasters, gay actors and actresses and, finally, openly gay members of the military. So is it really such a big, page-one deal that Washington Wizards center Jason Collins came out as a gay man?

Report: Women Get Plastic Surgery Due to Michelle Obama’s Arms
Tweet Share on Facebook April 29, 2013 CommentI hate it when researchers or statisticians point to some new "trend" that makes women look foolish. I hate it even more when the evidence so appropriately puts almost the entire blame for the foolishness on the women themselves.
