The Real Issue in Todd Akin's Abortion Comments
Tweet Share on Facebook August 20, 2012 CommentThere's something oddly encouraging about the fact that even in our hypermanaged, message-controlled political world, someone who may singularly hold the keys to the Senate majority can still say something so remarkably stupid and impolitic.

New York Needs to Close Drunk Driving Loophole
Tweet Share on Facebook August 17, 2012 CommentIt's called "Alix's Law," or it will be, if it ever passes the New York State legislature. And it's a no-brainer to deal with the deliberately brainless who drive drunk and hit someone.

Obama, Romney Campaign Ads Hit New Level of Dishonesty
Tweet Share on Facebook August 15, 2012 CommentThe most frustrating job in politics or journalism these days must be working for the campaign ad fact-checking operations at major newspapers and places like PolitiFact. Oh, it's not that these scrubbers lack material—quite the opposite, in fact. But it seems it doesn't matter what they find or report. People want to believe what they want to believe, and all of the cold, hard facts in the world won't shake that. The fact that a substantial group of people still believes President Barack Obama is a Muslim proves that. But this campaign has taken the misinformation to a new level.

Media Should Pay Less Attention to Paul Ryan Hecklers
Tweet Share on Facebook August 14, 2012 CommentAnyone who has cared for a 2-year-old knows a basic parenting/babysitting truth: Ignore tantrums, as responding to them will merely reinforce the bad behavior. So why does the press continue to reward hecklers at political events?

I Wish U.S.A. Basketball Had Lost in the Olympics
Tweet Share on Facebook August 13, 2012 CommentI will publicly acknowledge a somewhat petty, arguably un-Olympian attitude towards the XXX Games. I was obsessed with the idea of besting China in the medals count—both overall and among the gold medals—and I compulsively kept checking the web during the day, even knowing that looking would spoil the watching I planned to do that evening. And I'm thrilled that the U.S. athletes won more metal than any other country, including China, which I still suspect of cheating in gymnastics in 2008 and somewhat suspect of foul play this year.
Now, for another petty thought: I really sort of wish the American men's basketball team had lost.

Why Harry Reid Is Pressing His Mitt Romney Tax Allegations

Louisiana School's No Pregnancy Rule Is Sexist, Unconstitutional
Tweet Share on Facebook August 8, 2012 CommentTraditionalists complain that high school students don't read enough of the classics anymore—Shakespeare, for example, or those books many of us arguably didn't fully appreciate as teenagers but which are important to study to expand the mind and the knowledge of that era in history.

What Olympic Athletes Can Teach Congress
Tweet Share on Facebook August 7, 2012 CommentAmerican Olympic gymnast Samuel Mikulak had just completed an impressive vault, and was technically in the running for a bronze medal. Also-impressive performances by competitors took him out of the running, but Mikulak didn't pout or walk out. He watched with respectful awe as South Korean Yang Hak-Seon, an athlete so talented that a move in his unimaginably difficult vault is named after him, vaulted to the gold. Mikulak clapped.
