Don't Call University of Virginia President Dispute a Catfight
Tweet Share on Facebook June 27, 2012 CommentThe drama and disruption at the University of Virginia appears to be on its way to healing, with the university governing board voting unanimously to reinstate popular UVA President Teresa Sullivan. The battle was over money and mission, with the members of the board (made up of businesspeople) taking Sullivan to task for not moving quickly enough on reforms—reforms Sullivan said involved making deep cuts in education.

Scalia, Holder, and Partisan Politics Run Amok
Tweet Share on Facebook June 26, 2012 CommentA little rivalry among the branches of government is normal, and arguably healthy. The legislative branch doesn't like the executive branch telling it how to spend money (since Congress likes to make those decisions on its own). The executive branch likes to blame Congress (sometimes with good reason) for being unable to make compromises and pass even basic legislation. And there is often a little resentment of the judicial branch, those "unelected" types who are supposed to weigh in on the sense and constitutionality of a law, regardless of pressure from interest groups or hysteria from constituents.

Stop Blaming Teachers for Misbehaving Kids
Tweet Share on Facebook June 25, 2012 CommentThank heaven for kids like Wallace Kubler-Kramely, a 15-year-old in East Amherst, N.Y., who made a video "We All Get Older," which is a tribute to the parents and grandparents and other older folks who have taught him and guided him in his life. Wallace's sweet video not only restores some faith in young people after middle-schoolers in nearby Greece, N.Y. tormented a 68-year-old school bus monitor. But it helps underscore what I have always found to be the more common values system in my native western New York. I do believe there are more kids out there like Wallace than there are the bullies who went after Karen Klein.

Cheers for Internet Heroine Martha Payne
Tweet Share on Facebook June 20, 2012 CommentMartha Payne is my new heroine. The Scottish girl is only nine years old, but she's already done her part to expose poor nutrition for youth, helped bring cash to a charity, and stood up to the powers-that-be who tried to keep her quiet.

The Deeper Problem With Ousting of UVA President Teresa Sullivan
Tweet Share on Facebook June 19, 2012 CommentIt's tough to condone vandalism, but one can't help but feel a bit of satisfaction at the temporary defamation of the historic Rotunda at the University of Virginia.

Obama's Daily Caller Heckler Is a Jerk, Not a Journalist
Tweet Share on Facebook June 18, 2012 CommentIs the Daily Caller reporter's interruption of the president of the United States a sign of the deterioration of civility, the deterioration of the media in general, or the deterioration of respect for the office of the presidency?

Even Jeb Bush Decries Today's Extreme Partisanship

What Mitt Romney Doesn't Get About Presidential Qualifications
Tweet Share on Facebook June 13, 2012 CommentSo Mitt Romney thinks a candidate should be required to have three years of experience in the business community as a prerequisite for running for president. The job qualification, he told a crowd in Las Vegas, would be in addition to the age, birthplace, and citizenship requirements set by the constitution.
