Dick Cheney's Book Is Less Memoir Than Caricature

Growing up during the Vietnam War, I recall watching Huntley-Brinkley and seeing the weekly American death toll while in grade school. In 1971, I enlisted in the Army and studied (hopped) Vietmamese (Zipanese) from Jan. to Dec. 1972. My orders to ‘Nam were canceled in Jan. 1973. Instead of serving in SE Asia, I served at a desk in the National Security Agency where I learned, from experience at age nineteen, the government lied.

No one in the Bush administration ever described a delivery system whereby WMDs would actually threaten US.

Here are under radar facts about the decision to invade Iraq.

It will embarrass his heirs and provide ample material for historians to document our decline. Or, material for future "leaders" of his calibre, as a sort of "mein Kampf."

hey there mr. bill.heres one for yah, fined one poll that shows cheney favorable rating above 35%.most center thinking people know what an old tryant he is.

bruce b of NV 12:22AM August 31, 2011

Former employee says Chaney said that. He said it many times. Not Dick...

That blows your "that cheney, and his henchmen,"cherry picked" ,twisted information, and generally mislead congress along with the american people about the specious necessity to envade iraq" out of the water.

Waiting for poll that says "cheney is held in such contempt by a majority of the american people". From my first paragraph is obvious you make mistakes...

The quote was widely reported in various media, including http://www.ontheissues.org/2004/Dick_Cheney_Budget_+_Economy.htm

You're using quotes by people who had been lied to about the evidence, kept in the dark as to the actual evidence, and stampeded by the political climate created by those lies. No profiles in courage to be found there, then (but note who didn't join the bleating of the sheep: Obama). Also no evidence to be found there that any reasonable person would think, on review of the actual evidence available to Cheney and Bush, that Saddam had WMDs. I said at the very time that he probably did not, based on nothing more than a careful attention to the news. Of course, I also said Bush would never really go to war and it was all a large bluff, because the insiders had to know the WMD stories were blather, designed to scare the Iranians, and that a weakening of Iraq (which had nothing to do with 9/11, after all) would strengthen the Iranians and inevitably result in power for less-than-friendly Shiites in Iraq. Oops.

what the neocons choose to ignore is the fact that cheney, and his henchmen,"cherry picked" ,twisted information, and generally mislead congress along with the american people about the specious necessity to envade iraq.

this is just one of the reasons that cheney is held in such contempt by a majority of the american people.

I can accept that VP may be mistaken on Powell leaving. A small error certainly. Am sure Bush was sickened when no WMD was not found. But Bush had every reason to believe they existed:

"One way or the other, we are determined to deny Iraq the capacity to develop weapons of mass destruction and the missiles to deliver them. That is our bottom line."

--President Bill Clinton, Feb. 4, 1998

"Saddam Hussein has been engaged in the development of weapons of mass destruction technology which is a threat to countries in the region and he has made a mockery of the weapons inspection process."

-Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D, CA), Dec. 16, 1998

"Hussein has ... chosen to spend his money on building weapons of mass destruction and palaces for his cronies."

-- Madeline Albright, Clinton Secretary of State, Nov. 10, 1999

"There is no doubt that ... Saddam Hussein has reinvigorated his weapons programs. Reports indicate that biological, chemical and nuclear programs continue apace and may be back to pre-Gulf War status. In addition, Saddam continues to redefine delivery systems and is doubtless using the cover of a licit missile program to develop longer-range missiles that will threaten the United States and our allies."

Letter to President Bush, Signed by:

-- Sen. Bob Graham (D, FL), and others, Dec 5, 2001

"We know that he has stored secret supplies of biological and chemical weapons throughout his country."

-- Al Gore, Sept. 23, 2002

"We have known for many years that Saddam Hussein is seeking and developing weapons of mass destruction."

-- Sen. Ted Kennedy (D, MA), Sept. 27, 2002

"I will be voting to give the President of the United States the authority to use force -- if necessary -- to disarm Saddam Hussein because I believe that a deadly arsenal of weapons of mass destruction in his hands is a real and grave threat to our security."

-- Sen. John F. Kerry (D, MA), Oct. 9, 2002

"In the four years since the inspectors left, intelligence reports show that Saddam Hussein has worked to rebuild his chemical and biological weapons stock, his missile delivery capability, and his nuclear program. He has also given aid, comfort, and sanctuary to terrorists, including al Qaeda members ... It is clear, however, that if left unchecked, Saddam Hussein will continue to increase his capacity to wage biological and chemical warfare, and will keep trying to develop nuclear weapons."

-- Sen. Hillary Clinton (D, NY), Oct 10, 2002

Mark E of WA_ Pull up that quote by Cheney and give link. Don't think you will find a DIRECT QUOTE of Cheney saying that. A guy that wrote a book, who doesn't like Bush, said Cheney said that...

Bill Hedges of MO 8:54PM August 30, 2011

Dick "Reagan proved, deficits don't matter" Cheney is as out of touch now as he was in office. Good riddance.
