Obama's Right: On the Anniversary of 9-11, Volunteer
Tweet Share on Facebook August 31, 2011 Comment (4)Traveling abroad, and especially living abroad, provides one with a unique outsider perspective on one's own country. With some time away from the States, we can get a more objective sense of foreigners' impression of Americans. The worst stereotypes are overstated but not entirely without merit: that we are all morbidly obese (and unsophisticated eaters to boot), arrogant, money-obsessed, addicted to juvenile-themed culture and dominated by the view that the United States should tell everyone else how to live.

Dick Cheney's Book Is Less Memoir Than Caricature
Tweet Share on Facebook August 30, 2011 Comment (44)Self-reflection is not something we have come to expect in elected officials, particularly those who have left office fairly recently. Don't Blame Congress for Doing Fundraisers Over Town Halls
Tweet Share on Facebook August 18, 2011 Comment (2)Politico has done a couple of well-done and revealing articles about lawmakers who have declined to hold public town hall meetings while they are back in their home districts. Instead, the members have been holding fundraising events, where, presumably, voters who make a contribution can ask a question of his or her representative. Since the congressmen in question are Republicans, Democrats have immediately pounced, calling the practice "pay per view."

President Obama Needs His Martha's Vineyard Vacation
Tweet Share on Facebook August 17, 2011 Comment (18)As predictably as the August heat in Washington, columnists and other commentators are assailing both President Obama and members of Congress for going on vacation this month. Tweet Share on Facebook August 16, 2011 Comment (4)The 2012 campaign is now in full force. And it's not because there have been several GOP primary debates, or that a Republican candidate has already dropped out of the race, or even because President Obama has interrupted his can't-we-all-act-like-adults bit to criticize Congress.
