Farewell to U.S. News

May 11, 2012 RSS Feed Print

It's with a mixture of sorrow and excitement that I share the following news: Starting next week, I'll be blogging at The American Conservative, whose thoroughly revamped website is set to launch soon.

Why the sorrow? Simply, I'm going to miss contributing to U.S. News, which, thanks to the vision of editor Robert Schlesinger, has become one of the most consistently stimulating and interesting corners of the political blogosphere. Nowhere else on the Web can you find such a complete spectrum of intelligent liberals and conservatives—such a motley assortment of journalists, partisan activists, academics, and whatever it is you call people like me. Needless to say, I'll continue to be a daily-and-then-some reader of this site.

[See the latest political cartoons.]

But I'm excited, too, because The American Conservative is set to do likewise. The print magazine's motto says it all: "Ideas Over Ideology. Principles Over Party." Editorially, The American Conservative is planted firmly in the Anglo-American conservative tradition. Yet it welcomes complementary and even dissenting voices. The hope is to produce smart and lively debate, even at the risk of "cacophony," as the liberal The American Conservative contributor Noah Millman put it. It's a bold experiment, the chance to be a part of which I could not pass up.

To readers who tolerated, and perhaps even liked, what I had to say here, I invite you to join us over there.

More than that, though, I simply thank you for reading.

Before we convict Mitt let's have the trial and see the proof. PROOF _ A thought or afterthought rarely used by a liberal.

We were found guilty of causing the shooter in AZ to go on his rampage shooting spree. N O T. Liberals have a HAIR TRIGGER jumping to making us APPEAR BAD. Later going on their merry way when we ARE CLEARED...

Was there an election Nov. 2, 2010 ? We were shown OUT OF TOUCH with voters ??? MUST BE, Democrats ALWAYS BLAMING MY SIDE for not agreeing with their side...

But about the hair-cutting story. When Mitt was asked about it, he said he did not “recall the incident.”

This puts a whole new spin on things. The idea that Romney could have absolutely no recollection of this event is way more shocking than the incident itself. Did he engage in this sort of behavior so often that things just sort of ran together?

I don’t believe he’s that lacking in feeling. So I propose that we give him the benefit of the doubt and agree that he is lying through his teeth.

Yes! And, honestly, it’s a good bet. We have seen far less evidence of Romney as a guy with a mean streak than of Romney as a robotic campaigner who finds it impossible to speak in an open, unprogrammed manner — particularly about any incident that makes him look bad.

Scott Galupo,

There were times while reading your blogs when I was sure you were just another liberal Democrat doe-head. Over time though, I realized you had to blog some amount of liberal BS just to please your screwball boss!

I can easily project that you will be much happier at the American Conservative where the truth prevails. It must have been difficult as well as very boring to have to manufacture the tons of jounalistic rubbish required by leftist cult.

I've already added the A.C. to my favorite's list and I'll be looking for you there.

Best of luck to you....
