Don't Overestimate Post-2012 Rick Santorum

April 10, 2012 RSS Feed Print

The book on former Sen. Rick Santorum's campaign, suspended Tuesday, is that he was a plucky insurgent who shook up the GOP establishment with little money and a big heart.

This is partly true, but mostly sentimental gloss.

[See a collection of political cartoons on Rick Santorum.]

The reality is that Santorum's dark-horse campaign benefited from a number of factors.

  1. Former Gov. Mitt Romney is a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad candidate. But nonrich Republican voters were powerless to stop him.
  2. The non-Romneys who might have mounted a real challenge to Romney, such as former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty and Texas Gov. Rick Perry, also turned out to be terrible, horrible, no good, very bad candidates.
  3. Super PACs have made it possible for people with little institutional support or organization to make a lot of noise (which, contra legacy media worrywarts, might not be such a bad thing).
  4. As the American Conservative's Noah Millman has written, the Republican party changed the nominating process specifically to allow for a candidate like Santorum (if not Santorum himself) to have a shot at winning the nomination.

I wish Santorum well (and his daughter Bella good health) in whatever the next four years bring him. But he should be under no illusion that, should Romney lose, 2016 will be his turn. Despite the astonishing run he had this year, he's going straight to the back of the line.

To Bill Hedges of Mo, there are gatherings in the Thousands time after time for Dr. Paul. Would any other politician in the country come Close to filling football stadiums with enthusiastic and cheering crowds?? It's all on video fella.. so your denials won't cut it.

If you personally hate peace, or if you personally hate civil liberties, or even if it's just that you hate a sound currency........ we get it. But the Only person running in either of the majors who tells the truth and Has the support of the people [or any plan to fix things] is most definately that wise and honest Congressman from Texas that You seem so hateful of.

It's you Bill Hedges, it's Not the country, You are unAmerican. You actually are. Whom do you sell yourself to and why? Christian ethics will defeat you every time, go back under your rock Bill Hedges.. the people aren't interested in you.

Ron Paul for President of The United States, even if it bothers Bill Hedges. Happy Bill Hedges? You getting enough attention now sillyhead?

Voters said no once to Ron Paul. Did a second time. Paul well on to a third strike for President.

There is no furnace steaming up his election. No growing passion. There is NOTHING in his congressional records of accomplishments. Ability to do what must be done to legislate which is compromise (the engine to getting things done)...

Prayers for the Rick Santorum family.

Regarding politics, he's best retired now, his main political flaw is the wrongful willingness to legislate one's lifestyle.. ok, two flaws, also his willingness to launch pre emptive war with civilian casualties being probable - if not certain. Ok, three flaws, Rick Santorum is inconsistent on political principles. Yet - in his heart - Rick Santorum seems patriotic overall. As a family man, my opinion [from what is seen in the media] is that Rick Santorum is solid gold. Call 'em like ya see 'em, just the truth.

Liberty Republicans.

Enlightened Democrats.

Honest Independents.

Libertarians young and old.

Americans far and wide.

Dr. Ron Paul for President 2012 - United We Stand.
