The Lesson Not to Learn From Solyndra

September 16, 2011 RSS Feed Print

David Frum is certainly right that the bankruptcy of Washington-backed solar energy firm Solyndra makes the federal government's support for an individual firm look laughably inept.

"If the U.S. government wants to discourage the use of oil, there is one powerful mechanism at hand: tax the stuff," Frum concludes. "Private actors will respond to the incentive. They will conserve and substitute and innovate all on their own. But when it comes time for investments in individual firms? Back off and let Mr. Market do the job that he does best."

[Read about how Obama abandoned clean energy in his recent jobs speech.]

I agree.

Yet I think the episode gives the concept of a national economic strategy—one hesitates to utter the verboten phrase "industrial policy"—an unnecessarily bad name.

Frum's policy preference, to my mind, still constitutes such an economic strategy. It is more macro than micro, to be sure, but it's strategic all the same. We shouldn't shrink from this. Our competitors abroad certainly don't.

Former Reagan administration trade official Clyde Prestowitz cites several successful examples of government-nurtured development in the telecommunications, energy, semiconductor, and aviation industries in countries like China, South Korea, and Finland.

Government support of a specific industry need not entail the picking of winners at the micro level; often, it can take the form of policies that American conservatives favor: that is, tax breaks and deregulation.

[See a collection of political cartoons on energy policy.]

Prestowitz's broader—and I would argue unassailable—point is that, in the increasingly complex web of interdependent economies, countries can't avoid at least some notion of economic strategy.

Indeed, he writes, America has had one for the last 30 years. And it looks something like this:

It is to overconsume, and to promote weapons production, financial services, construction, medical research and services, agriculture, and oil and gas consumption and production. Further, it is both to offshore production and provision of all tradable manufacturing and services as well as, increasingly, high-technology R&D, and to expand the domestic retail, food service, and personal medical services industries. At the macro level, the strategy is to run up massive debt and borrow as much and as long as possible.

Again: We've had an economic strategy for quite a while. The problem is, it stinks.

How about that admitting us Republicans are correct. Raising taxes harm oil use. So we buy more Mid East oil that helps America ? More money leaving this Country ? Not going to retrofit all the gas burning cars on road.

Bill Clinton raised yacht tax and hurt that industry to near closing.

What do Democrats want to do but raise taxes. When has it ever raised more revenue.

JFK said lower taxes on rich and generate far more government revenue. As CBO shows with Bush's cuts:

“According to the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO), the Bush tax cuts actually shifted the total tax burden farther toward the rich so that in 2000-2004, total income tax paid by the top 40% of income-earners grew by 4.6% to 99.1% of the total.”

Little passed by Democrat controlled Congress and obama was good for this Country. Major chopping block to their legislation. Stop destroying America with your liberal ideas.

For Green to work, punishing carbon energy is not help to our Country. When GREEN has a innovation making it good deal, people will flock to it...

Ah! , yes the Solyndra fiasco;...uh!...is anyone surprised out there?...perhaps no.

Let's see;

This one episode (as so various others), this one is so simple to understand.

The current anti-constitutional group now at helm in Washington (THE OBAMA REGIME / THE PRESIDENTIAL CONSORTIOUM) is so up to their eyeballs in deception, fraud, illegal practices and ultimately into COLLECTIVE CORRUPTION which brings as result the lack of faith from the public from all sectors.

So many episodes like this one, so many individuals without an iota of integrity,...much less patriotic sense toward our country are at play here.

Mr Obama (the front-face / propagandist / messenger, if you will,..although there are still somes out there calling him 'president') is in dangerous grounds in more than one way regarding his platform fraudulently adquired in presidential election 2008.; EVERYONE KNOWS THIS BUT EVERYONE IS HEAVILY RELUCTANT TO SAY THE TRUTH OR START BLOWING THE WISTLE.

So let's have this clear, shall we?. Mr Obama is taking all the hits from those who do not like his actions,....however the real bad guys (although Obama is the front-face ) is a conglomerate of people that can be known or called, - 'THE PRESIDENTIAL CONSORTIOUM'....a group of individ;uals of clear anti-constit;utionalism and do not care ;much less love this country...

...they have a...uh....let's say...a SABOTAGE AGENDA OF DESTRUCTION AGAINST THIS NATION - TO BRING DOWN THE AMERICAN SYSTEM - TO BRING DOWN THE LAST SUPER-POWER IN THE WORLD...meaning, UNITED SATES OF AMERICA...and once this nation is down, well, once that happens, all the remining ones will not have a choice but to cave into the GLOBALIST WORLD NEW ORDER.

So they are there ('THE PRESIDENTIAL CONSORTIOUM') , there in Washington attaking our great country with everything thay got. Three main areas are under their nefarious, insidious, and malevolent moves; - ECONOMY , NATIONAL SECURITY , SOCIO-DYNAMIC STRUCTURE.

And who are this people?....care for some names? ...very well, ...KERRY,SCHUMMER,SOROS, BUFFETT,STERN,AXELROD,JARRETT,DOOD,O'NEAL,GEITHNER,BERNANKEN,IMMLET,FRANK,REZKO,...just to mention somes;....

....this group hired Obama to serve as voice for them, to do the propaganda, to pose and act as the 'president' for he would look good as 'the first black american president'.

In reality the man(Obama) is only talking, doing , and acting as he is told to do - and nothing more.

The public bought this for some time but not any more for the american public is now well informed, they do research, and investigation, and as result knows what is going on.

Illegal malpractices, deceptions, fraud and corruption are characteristics well known to be attatched to the current admininstration, and thier patriotism is not questionable...no-no-no, PATRIOTISM IS NOT IN DISPUTE ...and why?...BECAUSE PATRIOTISM IS A CHARACTERISTIC NOT FOUND IN THE OBAMA REGIME / PRESIDENTIAL CONSORTIOUM.

So there , in short.

Input anyone?

Opinions welcome.
