Why Illegal Immigration Should Worry Democrats

One of the things that continually puzzles me about the immigration debate—not just in Arizona, but generally—is how the left almost exclusively frames it in terms of economic opportunity and civil liberties.

And yet the cost of undocumented immigrants has an appreciable impact on just about every policy arena that liberals care most about--whether it’s rising healthcare costs, schools that are long on pupils and short on funding, the environmental degradation and aesthetic blight of exurban sprawl, pressure on low-income wage-earners, or widening inequality.

Illegal immigration is not the lone culprit of any of these problems, but, at the very least, it exacerbates them.

Maybe it’s the perception of conservative racism or xenophobia; maybe it’s the potential bonanza of future Democratic votes. Whatever the case, liberals are oddly tone-deaf to the challenges of importing so much poverty.

If I’m wrong about this—if I simply haven’t read widely enough—I’ll happily stand corrected.

We have entered a new era. Arizona opened the door to the room with the elephant. I always held liberal beliefs- yet, now, I find myself angry at illegals, especially Latinos because they are the most vocal, and the most demanding, particularly here in California. The Asians are less aggressive.

I am sickened to see placards demanding 'rights'. WHAT RIGHTS? We should feed, house, clothe, and give you free medical care when you are an uninvited guest? I wish I could say over my dead body.

No other nation on the planet would put up with the garbage thrown as we have. Yet- we keep on giving, accepting, adding yet another language for us to hire interpreters- we have become the world's enabler; and it's killing us. Secular doesn't work. Meld- this is the melting pot, right?

Close the doors for awhile, America. We are full, and we are financially strapped. Maybe in 5 years you can APPLY to come here, providing you have a potential job, enough capital to provide yourself with housing and medical care.

I want them GONE. No discussing of the wall, no discussions of ANY kind until they are OUT! Whatever it takes. Fine the employers enough to close businesses. Make it jail time to hire one of them.

Change the law and make it retroactive so their kids are not citizens.

They pay hardly any taxes and take advantage of us. Businesses get all the benefits of them and the taxpayers pay the price.

I am sick of teachers being laid off and hospitals closing and Latino gangs and all the drugs they bring into the country. Many are better off in U.S. jails than they are while living in their own country.

They are turning the U.S. into the third world country that they left. Go home and straighten out your own country.

Ronald Reagan said the biggest mistake of his presidency was amnesty to illegals.

The black construction industry in California has disappeared because of these people. Bush got a special law passed to allow the Katrina rebuild to hire illegals rather than the black businesses who really wanted to rebuild their community.

It's a laugh. Both Dems and Reps are wanting these people here and NOBODY is representing the people. It is like Nafta and Cafta. They will pass some amnesty bill in the night and not give Americans the chance to protest. They will pass some amnesty or 'road to citizenship' whether we want it or not.

Out. No talking, just get rid of them. If we keep them in the country, only more will come. Out first, talk later.

"If all nations immediately enforce strict laws regulating population..."

Irony: People who complain about the "police state" in Arizona, and simultaneously advocate a fascist/totalitarian solution. How do you enforce these laws? Do you mandate one child per couple, like China? Do you encourage abortions of female babies on a massive scale, like China? What if I want to have a big family, 3 or 4 kids - do I get hauled off to the "reeducation camp"? Fined and taxed? Fertility rates have been falling steadily, what about that effect? Go live in China and see how great it is when the government moves into your pants.
