Newt Gingrich: Republicans Won 1995 Government Shutdown

And now Democrats claim Bill Clinton balanced the budget and brag about it. Isn't that funny

Dennis Brown of NJ 12:33AM February 24, 2013

This is again a classic example of the beltway thought process. Gingrich didn't care if he Clinton got re-elected, although Republicans did continue to pick up seats in 96 and 98, he didn't run for politics for political gain. His point was that, at the end of the day, he forced Clinton to balance the budgets, cut taxes, and reform welfare. He never cared what the political consequences were, all he cared about were the effects on government policy.

And in that sense, Republicans won because they did what they came to Washington to do instead of compromising their integrity like any beltway insider like yourself would have advised him to do.

You've misread or have me confussed with Mitchell,Please God don't do that.I have NEVER and will never use "lil Bush",thats saved for the left.

...he led the Republican party away from the Raise Taxes to Balance the Budget wing -- the "moderates" and "realists." Yes, Reagan led the way, but Bush senior's "kinder, gentler" party was walking hand-in-hand with the Democrats into the statist's Promised Land of every expanding spending followed by tax increases to pay for it. Do you not recall when Newt called Bob Dole the "tax collector for the welfare state"? Right on.

Yes, it unraveled way before it should have through the love of power. But Newt is worth listening to. But not worth nominating for President.

The only reason otherwise-liberal media organizations hire "conservatives", is to urge the GOP to become more liberal. Examples of this include Ross Douthat(mentioned in this post), Kathleen Parker, David Brooks and David Frum. Welcome, Scott Galupo, to this lineup.

You have fem-fem Scott Galupo, lisp master Chris Mathews, Ever light in the loafers Kieth Olberman and of course Rachel Mandow. Their feeble attempts to trash conservative America is laughable.

You are right, but...

If you have it in you to recall, the process has been followed for ages, this is where the problem begins. Under lil bush and the Dick their method of governing was "either you are with us or you are not," once again, if you can recall, they didn't even begin to even act like they wanted anything to do with bi-partisanship, as long as they were in control, and messing up the entire country, the tea-baggers set back idly and just watched the inevitable implosion. As stated previously, hypocrites!

Your beloved lil bush and the Dick cheney, are the reason that we have a black man in office right now, they were awful and their wide-stance criminal minded cohorts were lock in step with that administration, totally evil. So much so, I probably could have beat any repub candidate, so to disregard repubs total ineptitude during their eight-year run is a form of a mental disorder, reality is only one click away, all you have to do is look it up and read, then absorb the stench left by your beloved lil bush and the dicj Cheney

Mitchell of NC 2:22PM April 14, 2010

Please reread my post, you will see no lil Bush in anything I write.Must've mistaken mine with Mitchell, don't do that again please.I don't walk with blinders on.Thanks.

Hunter of WI 1:31PM April 14, 2010

Let's not have amnesia. Recall that Congress controls the purse strings and thereby appropriates and spends the money. Clinton had a Republican controlled Congress and it was that particular Congress that curbed gov. spending and created the surplus.

Remember that "lil" Bush as you affectionately refer to our former president had a Democrat controlled Congress which controled the purse strings and spends the money.

Democrats wear the tag "Tax and Spend" for a reason.

David of ID 1:13PM April 14, 2010

Typical, a conservative cannot even spell "Conservative" correctly.
