Yesterday Congress passed the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, a darling of the Left and likely the first bill that President Obama will sign. As the Washington Post described it:

The U.N. Shares Blame for Darfur Atrocities

As the war in Darfur approaches its sixth anniversary, there's a tendency to heap all the blame for the region's calamities on the Sudanese government. If something bad happens, this thinking goes, then the guilt must wholly and indubitably rest with the government—no further reflection needed. Most of the time that's probably true. But at times the Sudanese government also serves as a convenient scapegoat for the missteps of the international community. A case in point is a newly released whitewash report from the United Nations and its peacekeeping force (UNAMID) about an attack on a Darfur refugee camp last August.

The Washington Post Falls Flat

No kidding, this was the lead story in this morning's Washington Post : "United States Faces a Steep Decline in Women's Figure Skating." The. Lead. Story.
In a way, I suppose it's refreshing. Amid declining circulations and ad sales, most media pooh-bahs are trying more than ever to make their newspapers and magazines relevant. Evidently, there's no such hand-wringing over at the Post.

The Obama Inauguration's Carbon Footprint

Team Obama says reducing the carbon-dioxide emissions that result from burning fossil fuels will be a priority, and some careless talk suggests his EPA will eschew carrots for the punitive stick of regulation and taxes. Now the good people over at the Institute for Liberty have punched back with a carbon-footprint estimate for the Obama inauguration itself.

Racial Media Bias Meets Liberal Media Bias

With the inauguration of America's first black president less than a week away, it was inevitable that the self-obsessed media would insert their own diversity into the occasion. Sure enough, in his Monday Washington Post wrap-up, Howard Kurtz laments the lack of black reporters covering the White House as "a pale reflection of America." Summing up the piece's prevailing sentiment is the Post's Michael Fletcher, who is black. "It feels like you would want to have black journalists there to bring a different racial sensibility," he says.
Whoa, hold on a minute: Hasn't the mantra from media types all along been that journalists are objective?

The Israeli Defense Forces continue to face a good deal of heat from humanitarian groups such as Human Rights Watch, which say the military's tight cordon around Gaza City is taking a punishing toll on civilians who are in desperate need of humanitarian supplies.

State Department E-mail Server Crash Illustrates Bigger-Picture Diplomatic Problems

It's a general principle among diplomats that talking can solve every problem. And, by extension, the more that people communicate, the better a situation can be. If the United Nations wasn't disproof enough of that notion, consider the recent crash of the State Department's E-mail system when a stray message was sent to thousands of employees.
