Obama's New Economics

History shows that government run infrastructure job programs do nothing to stimulate the economy. Tax breaks and incentives for small business and consumers do the most good. A flat income tax rate would be a fair thing to do in this country....but we all know the rich just keep getting richer and they are running the government. Money is power and the rest of us poor working slobs will remain just that. Unless Americans start to pay more attention to the politics in this country things will never "change". We need more teaparties to weed out the politicians that are calling real Americans "fakes" and " instigators". Politicians who don't really care about what their constituants want from government should not be reelected. We owe it to ourselves and our children to become more involved and pay attention to what goes on in all aspects of government. We have become lazy and complacent. Our fore fathers would be quite distressed to see us now.

Why would one ever raise taxes? To pay for government services. For many of us that includes schools, police, firefighters, public works, roads, water treatment, sewage treatment, garbage disposal, etc. For others it may mean national defense, the military, wars, intelligence services, etc. And government serves other positive purposes providing physical, legal, and regulatory environment that promotes safety, productivity, and success (e.g. avoiding the food contamination that occurred in China) . It is not always perfect, but if one does not like government, he can move to southern Somalia where there hasn't been a government since 1991.

Taxes are not all about economics; they are also about providing public goods and services that need to be paid for. It is becoming clear that the US can not continue indefinitely to borrow to pay for its own government (the Republican strategy of Borrow and Spend). We in the US will have to start paying our own way and that means paying [more] taxes - particularly if we want to remain a super power. Hopefully, people are starting to get this and we will end our freeloading ways (after the recession). If not, this economic crisis is just the first of more that will end badly for the US.

That someone who 'has a clue on how we can getout of this mess' is not Pelosi, Reid, Frank - and the Democrats who resisted both President Clinton and Republican efforts to REGULATE Fanny/Freddymac regaring the risky mortgages to people who were not qualified. I do not understand how people of either Party or affiliation can ignore this. Why would you think that the same people who caused the dominoes to start to fall are the ones who can be trusted to make it right - considering they are trying to unfairly deflect blame and not accept responsibility.

I hear no one say that we can stimulate our economy by having the Government invest in repairing our roads and bridges and other parts of our substructure which needs attention.

That would create jobs, stimulate demand and improve the structure which is essential for transportation and travel.

Why is it that Republicans always want to cut taxes for the rich? That makes no sense at all. I mean think about it. The rich pretty much dictate what people are going to make anyway right? They get to set the wages. So let''s say someone make $30,000 a year and they pay $10,000 in income tax. That person actually only made $20,000 right? So let''s say the govt gets rid of income tax for someone making $30,0000 or less. That person just got a raise yes, but that company wouldn''t have to give that person a raise for the next year, or the year after that. And that could be very beneficial to the company right. And think about this, wouldn''t that make it easier for us to compete for jobs with the rest of the world? If companies didn''t have to pay someone $30,0000 a year, but instead only $20,000 a year then they would be more inclined to keep maunfacturing jobs here than ship them overseas, right. It makes no sense at all to give tax breaks to those that dictate our wages anyway. They just get to make more money, and the workers get whatever the company wants to pay. I think Ron Paul is right on this issue. Getting rid of income tax, at least for low income workers might be the best move this country could make right now. You might want to think that over. To bring back jobs we need to lower the pay rate that companies are willing to pay here, and cutting the income tax for the poor would do that. Either way when income tax is cut the rich benefit, so it might as well be cut for the poor.

We as Americans can not afford to vote for the Republicans because they picked a pretty woman for Vic President. Barack Obama, Joe Biden are a team of go getters and over achievers, and I believe they will get the job done. We as Americans are lossing our jobs, homes right now and we need someone who has a clue on how we can get out of this mess.

Could you please tell me how many times has Gov. Sarah Palen been at the White House and if so do you have pictures as proof.

Sam Dealey makes a good point regarding Obama's taxation morphing. But the first reader comment--jeepers, I just hope the third one is a lot better than that.

An economic "conservative" sooner or later balances the budget AND sees to it that taxes are sufficient to pay back at least SOME of the debt through surpluses. A "conservative" pays for wars in real time or does not fight them.

A "conservative" actually exercises judgment in this regard.

Bush did not. McCain will not. Obama and a Dem Congress might.

Yeah, yeah. Not in a recession. Okay, but when?

Don't forget. ALL politicians of any stripe are going to REDUCE taxes. The AMT creep and expiration of 2001/2003 cuts require this. The only question is which to reduce and by how much.

McCain can only veto. McCain cannot "pass" a single law. Congress can reduce (or not) depending on the recalcitrance of McCain. Therefore, McCain's promises are wholly empty.
