Obama Tax Deal Left GOP Without Jobs and Unemployment Answers

President Obama caught a lot of flack, particularly from the left, for the tax deal he cut with Republicans in December, extending the Bush tax cuts in exchange for, among other things, an extension of unemployment benefits. Progressives accused Obama of caving to the right and while I disagreed on balance, it still remains to be seen how the repercussions from the deal play out in terms of future negotiations.

But one (perhaps unintended, perhaps intended) consequence seems to be emerging as Democrats start to hammer the jobs message: The deal seems to have taken away one of the GOP’s main talking points on the jobs and unemployment issue.

Congressional Democrats have started lashing House Republicans about their lack of focus on jobs, noting that the new majority’s first few acts have been sops toward the base like healthcare repeals and a raft of abortion-restricting provisions. Wednesday Democrats launched a “When Are the Jobs?” website. [Read Robert Schlesinger: GOP Falling Into the Same Healthcare Trap That Snared Democrats]

But what answer could the GOP have? As I’ve written before, tax cuts have become the alpha and omega of GOP economic policy. But they played that card even before they took control of the House. Having more or less gotten what they wanted they’re not in an especially strong position to go back to the tax cut well--especially in this fiscal environment. Still it's surprising that with an economy that remains soft they are not even making a pro forma rhetorical attempt at cutting the individual tax rate, maybe as a birthday present to Ronald Reagan. Instead House leadership is faced with a rank-and-file uprising on the right demanding more spending cuts. While the GOP has tried to decouple tax cuts from the budget deficit, but even they can’t with a straight face make a new tax cut pitch in the face of the dreaded Obama deficits ... not that the party can credibly claim new status of deficit hawks after their tax deal added hundreds of billions of dollars to the budget deficit. [See editorial cartoons about the GOP]

What they’re left with is a “cut-and-grow” program that even Republicans admit isn’t selling. Here’s the GOP’s problem: the idea that cutting government spending will necessarily lead to job growth might be a given in conservative ivory towers, but its logic isn’t obvious to most Americans. And if they want to know how easy it is to sell notions that require more than one bumper sticker to explain, they can ask the Democrats how the healthcare reform debate turned out.

Schlesinger is right, Obama out flanked the GOP by taking away their single issue of cutting taxes. Its the republican answer to everything, except governing.

Governing, effective governing is not part of the GOP agenda.

Steve King has laid it out the plan to shutdown the government, to kill the United States of America unless the special interests and minority party gets their way. Basically the GOP got their tax cuts for the rich and now they want to pay for them by slashing any and all government services (that don't cater to the billionaires and special interest groups).

The billionaires got their tax cuts and Obama has got the GOP boxed in without anymore freebie giveaways the GOP can get.

America has the lowest effective corporate taxes of the Western Industrialized countries, so much so that many business here pay no taxes at all and in many cases taxpayers are end up paying scurrilous companies rebates through twisted tax loopholes.

What is the GOP option if they can't cut more taxes?

Now the Republicans have to come up with ideas for governing. Tell you what, slashing and burning the US economy isn't going to fly.

What happened to 'focusing on creating jobs like a laser?

All the GOP ideas being bandied around are plans that will result in layoffs of thousands and the elimination of massive amounts of state and communities services.

If the GOP plan is to nickel and dime American workers till they are willing to accept Chinese wages, their idea of creating jobs is nonsense.

This Republican to layoff hundreds of thousands of American by cutting any and all budgets is a recipe for disaster and betrays the GOP intent to turn this country into a 3rd world country that can't affor to take care of its own, but can support entitlements for billionaires. Seems to me this is the GOP plan for a neo-feudalism controlled by the junta of billionaires who are going be trying buy elections politicians going forward, rolling back any regulation of the economy back to the days of Calvin Coolidge, and eliminating any entitlements except for these of billionaires and their cronyies.

Its time to put up or shut up for the GOP. Show your hand how you are going to govern - for the best interests of Americans or reduce our economy to peanuts to pay for the tax cuts for the rich.

The democrats are hammering the job message hey , well , after running the congress since 2006 and the whole show since 2008 and running unemployment up to 9.6% to 16% and debt and deficits higher than anyother congress and president , they'd do good to shut-up . The new house has been in less than 2 months and the left still has the senate and pres.

It seems like the lefts answers are still more backdoor spending and bigger goverment . It would be nice for a change if you lefty clowns would quit thinking everyone is as stupid and as easily brainwashed as you people are , we can see what's going on , and who is and has been keeping things down and slow to recover , it's you guys , you guys for your big goverment , class warfare agenda . So far the right is trying to do what they ran on , repeal Obamacare and cut spending (more than you can say about what Obama ran on ) . One thing is for sure , if the republicans were not elected we would not have extended the Bush tax rates .

Help Stop The Political Traitors In Congress & End Illegal Politics In The U.S

We must organize & mobilize as a nation now… The U.S is on the path of being taken over by illegal immigrant and terrorist by 2011. Media black outs & internet censoring or site blocking in the U.S is already being tested and a bill is up for a vote. What’s next to be taken away, freedom of speech and the right to bear arms? Beware crooked businesses, politicians, and other trader illegal immigrant supports will push congress & Obama to vote to yes on an amnesty bill this year to allow the continued invasion of over 30 million illegal immigrants. Most of who are habitual lawbreakers, uneducated, criminals, terrorists, gang members, pedophiles, prostitutes, and drug users/dealers. Illegal Immigrant and supporters steal money, use violence, and make terrorist threats to people who oppose amnesty or want laws enforced. Defense budgets and military bases all over the country are closing down. Wake up U.S citizens!!! We do not need more illegal’s joining the military. We have the draft and Militia’s in law for emergency or invasion. Why are our military soldiers dispatched all over the world? Not to protect us, but to protect big corporations and the rich over seas. Your current lawmakers have sold us out to foreign nations, private investors and the poor south of our border. The plan is to replace us with illegal immigrants then leave legal U.S citizens broke, hungry and defenseless to be taken over by rich and poor foreigners with bad intension. Citizens born in the United States are the target of elimination and are slowly being pushed out of the workforce to be left broke and dry. Illegal immigrants in the U.S earn an average income of $30,000 per yr with no papers, elementary diploma, high school diploma, or college degree. This is our regional land and the citizens born of it have a physical & spiritual oath to preserve or defend it at all cost. A fact is illegal immigrants hate U.S citizens; many raise their kids to be lawbreakers, criminals and to support terrorism in the USA like there parents. This Dream Act and any for of amnesty is a breach of national security and must be stopped now. The people do not have to accept this treason or any new laws or legislation that supports foreigners before it’s own legal citizens. So if you prefer to keep living a lie and are too scared, lazy or have no will to defend the soil you were born on to help citizens & people in need… Then don’t follow us at http://usmoa.org/
