While an abstinence program not based on preachiness is certainly a novel approach, it might not be the stuff on which to base sweeping generalizations about abstinence-only education, which typically takes a rather different approach.

And there's real world data on the effectiveness of traditional abstinence-only education. The Bush administration spent, by one estimate, $1.5 billion on abstinence-only education in the last decade. Guess what we have to show for it, according to a study released just last week: more teen pregnancies, more teen births, and more teen abortions. According

When I was doing experiments in college as a psych student I quickly learned that it was pretty easy to manipulate the variables in any single study to show the result you wanted. This is why it is important to do a metaanalysis of as many studies as possible on any given subject, in order to reach any sort of correct conclusion about what works and what does not.Metanalysis tends to eliminate researcher bias and provide at least some glimpse of the underlying reality. Most of the studies of abstinence education conclude that it does not work and this study would seem to be an "outlier".

This is incorrect. The study indicated that students subjected to a particular curriculum emphasizing abstinence delayed sexual activity at a marginally greater rate than did those enrolled in a "safer-sex" program. That's great if your primary objective is delaying sexual activity in some children until their mid-teen years, but it's not exactly a sweeping verdict.

For my part--and like you, I'm pretty conservative--if my kids went to a health class that purported to teach human sexuality and were denied an objective, data-driven, all-encompassing perspective on the subject, I'd be angry; their schools would be failing them and, for that matter, impinging on my prerogative as a parent. My wife and I will decide what's best for my kids in this area, not a public entity.

The study also encouraged holding off on sex "until you're ready," not "until you get married"; there's a big difference there.

Also, all this talk assumed that kids in middle school are actually paying attention during health class. Were you? I know I wasn't.

Leave it to the social liberals to deny the results of the very scientific method used to decry religious ideology.

The result is simple: using the scientific method, researchers PROVED that abstinence education is more effective at reducing sexual activity than other methods.

There is no "may be more effective" here. The question has been answered.

You social liberals are free to admit you were wrong now.

Abstinence is only for those who have self-control. All others yield to their impulses.
