Note to Mr. Robert Schlesinger:

I'd be careful, were I you. She just might might buy your apartment complex and evict you. And then buy any apartment complex you might choose to relocate to.

Worse still, she might buy the organization you work for -- and NOT fire you!

Bottom line is that people who can garner public attention need to be listened to -- whether you like, admire or agree with them. Because they're likely to set the tone and perhaps the agenda.

"That is factually incorrect. Huckabee was the runner-up to McCain as he won more delegates."

Huckster had to stay in the race for 2 months to finally pull ahead of Romney. Also, Huck is NOT a fiscal conservative and he is not a bright bulb when it comes to foreign affairs. Huck is a social conservative, but only be strong in one of the three areas of the Reagan triad makes for an awefully wobbly base.

Palin energizes both social and fiscal conservatives (the entire base), but she has an experience issue. Pawlenty is Palin-lite (extra-lite). He has more experience, but the base is not particularly excited by him. Newt is the poster boy for intellectual, elitist, establishment insiders. In the current climate, he is a non-starter. Huck is a good social conservative, but, eventhough he talks a good game on his FOX show, fiscal conservatives don't think he can walk the walk. He is like Bush-lite, but he talks better. Romney is not trusted by social conservatives, and he has the uberliberal burden of Romneycare to answer for. So maybe that leaves Mitch Daniels.

Romney was without question the runner up. When he left the race it was over. Huckabee was never a threat to McCain, and merely stayed in the race to pick up delegates here and there. It was shameful and petty. Romney left gracefully. Huckabee has no grace.

"As the runner up in 2008"

That is factually incorrect. Huckabee was the runner-up to McCain as he won more delegates.

Mr. Schlesinger's analysis is, as per usual, quite astute - but he, as is the case with many pundits, runs the risk of reading to much into things. It is not at all clear how this race will turn out and, therefore, how the recriminations will be applied. My suspicion is that if the Republican candidate wins, much will be forgotten. If the conservative candidate wins it will embolden the right to be much more aggressive in the congressional process, which is not - again for the right - necessarily a bad thing. If the Democrat wins there will be a lot of finger pointing but only to the extent that the different presidential candidates are trying to claim the mantle of most rightward person in the race.
