RIP William Safire

Republicans, from Nison, Erlichman, Haldeman to Reagon, North, Poindexter, to Bush, Cheney, Rumsfield have proven that their allegiance to the constituition and "freedom" is little more than empty rhetoric. Enemies lists, Secret plans for secret governments, illegal wiretapping, torture. For these people, the ends (whatever it may be) justifies the means. To them, freedom is just a campaign slogan.

After reading Kutler's "Abuse of Power,' with part of Nixon's tapes transcribed, I can't praise Safire. The article says Safire gave a Nixon speech a nice review in his column. That was unethical and kept alive mistaken notions about Nixon. The tapes are filled with astounding schemes of how to lie, how to "leak" information, how to "use IRS audits to scare candidates and people who contributed to Democrats." It sounds like a movie about an organized crime boss, as he tells people how to commit perjury & obstruct justice. Nixon said the invasion of Ellsberg's psychiatrist's office wasn't a crime because "they didn't get anything." The Watergate burglars were subverting our election process but Nixon said it was a 3rd rate burglary and "stupid. He said if his men did it, they would not be stupid, as he lied that they didn't do it. Until I read the book, I didn't realize Nixon had a psychiatrist. Mondale was harmed by the fact his VP Eagleton had psychiatric care. if Safire wrote some of the speeches that elected and kept Nixon in office, he did this nation and the world a terrible disservice.
