Obama Lifts the Cuba Travel Ban—A Good Start, But Not Enough

I am a dual citizen of Canada/USA. I just returned from a week long trip to Cuba. I used my Canadian passport. Will suffer consequences next time I go to the United States?

Come on...this embargo doesn't even make sense anymore. We are not helping the people of Cuba this way. America should lift the travel ban to Cuba so we can freely travel and communicate, educate, and eventually create change for the better! This is a small island in the Carribean that deserves better.

I did not know this until like a week ago. I think its very weird that can't travel there. Does the US government not store prisoners of war there too? How come they put them there but we can't travel there? Email me!

Just like to say hi will come and chat a little later just finishing off some homework, and believe me it is not easy writing in the heat here at the moment.

I think the American public is ready to let go of the animosity towards Cuba, and has been for a long time. The official reasons for the embargo are specious, as the current Haitian government is much more brutal and greedy than Castro ever was, and there are certainly several African countries (as well as the ones the author mentioned) that are far more deserving of ostracism. I think a frequently overlooked reason the US has not progressed to normalize relations is there are still some in the US government who still feel the sting of the humiliation of the Bay of Pigs debacle. Thankfully Obama seems to have moved beyond that.

Americans can visit a communist country, China. Why not Cuba? You can't blame the american government for the oppression of Castro. It will be legal someday to visit Cuba and I will be one of the first to visit.

It's not like it's that difficult to get to Cuba from the US. Just fly through the Bahamas, Canada or Mexico and you're there. It's a bit inconvenient and more expensive, but not really a big deal. Don't use the travel ban as an excuse if you really want to go.

The United States will never allow Americans to travel to Cuba as long as the island nation is communist. Anerica and its governments are afraid of communinism and fear if American tourists travel to the island, their money will support the Cuban military. This is partly true. But their dollars will in fact aid the entire Cuban nation as a whole. No fear though, Canadians and Europeans are still welcome and Cuba and continue to visit in droves every year. As a Canadian, I have been to Cuba three times and plan to return. One of the main reasons I love Cuba so much, apart from the amazing beaches and womderful people, is that no Americans are allowed to visit. Long live the American fear of communism!
