President Barack Obama will reportedly emphasize personal responsibility in his inaugural address. This obviously hearkens back to JFK's sentiment that we should put the national interest over our own needs. But it also is very authentic to Obama himself, hearkening back to his days as a community organizer.
Obama's critics referred to his community organizer experience derisively, but responsibility for taking care of problems ourselves strikes me as a very basic community organizer message: We cannot wait for someone else to come solve our problems; we must solve them ourselves.
Of course the community has gotten a bit bigger.
