Has William Kristol recently received a sharp blow to the head? Have I? These questions are prompted by the fact that his Times column today on fixing the economy is actually sensible and worth reading.

Except for the first line Schaefer's comments are essentially what I believe--give or take a few items.

If--as most economists say--WW II got us out of the depression, then ,certainly, FDR must get the credit. While his earlier efforts may have not been successful in curing the depression, they sure did relieve some of the suffering and misery that went with it.

an excellent comment by Schaefer. Having grown up in the former Soviet Union, I have no doubt that the centralized government will only hinder any progress. Just to clear my mind, can someone explain to me why so much "credit" for Great Depression is given to FDR? If I have my dates right, the market crashed in 1929 and FDR did not get into the White House until 1933. What happenned in the over three years in between? This is an honest request. I realize that FDR was a skunk and indirectly he WAS responsible for six million Jews perishing by refusing entry to the US. Feel free to use my e-mail (app4jxsyahoo.com) to respond. Thanks and G-d bless.
