Kids Will Die Without Obamacare?

MSNBC’s Ed Schultz makes a naked appeal to emotion to defend a disastrous law.

MSNBC's reliably liberal Ed Schultz – who, it was announced today, will soon have his weeknight show back – tried to inject a little religion into the debate over defunding Obamacare on Saturday when he implied that children will die if the new law fails to go into effect as planned.

Well, he's already missed the bus on that score since it has been President Barack Obama himself who keeps moving the target dates for implementation, issuing waivers to politically influential organizations and letting deadlines slide because the appointees he has tasked with bringing the new system on line are just not up to the job.

Moreover, by pulling out the hackneyed "children will die" line – which is not the trump card liberals seem to think it is – Schultz misses a few obvious points, the most important being that "children will die" if Obama care becomes law. So will the elderly, people in high risk categories and others who will not be able to get the care they require in a timely fashion because the existing system will be overloaded by the newly enrolled – see Massachusetts, Romneycare – and because of the rationing that will inevitably come to pass when costs need to be cut.

In fact, children will die regardless of what is done to the health care system because, in a world that is often cruel and unfair, children do sometimes die, as do the rest of us eventually.

The real question is whether more children will die without Obamacare than would die with it. Mr. Schultz, by implication, thinks he knows, but no one does, really. How many extraordinary life-saving efforts currently used on premature infants, for example, will become too expensive to utilize once the new law is in place? And how many children will die as a result who, under the current system, might otherwise have survived?

Obamacare is a mess. As Avik Roy wrote Sunday on The Apothecary blog, "The (Congressional Research Service), Congress' non-partisan in-house think tank, compiled 82 deadlines that the Affordable Care Act mandates upon the first three years of its own implementation. Remarkably, it turns out that the White House has missed half of the deadlines legally required by the ACA. And some of those deadlines remain unmet to this day."

No Mr. Schultz, that dog won't hunt. Naked appeals to emotion are not going to fix Obamacare. It's a bad law and a bad idea for a law that will make health care in America worse, not better. It needs to be scrapped.
