Mr. Roff, as dyed-in-the-wool Liberal Democrat, I have strongly disagreed with you on many occasions, such as your opinion that "...Turning away donated food intended for the homeless is the height of left-wing, bureaucratic arrogance...". However, if Mayor Bloomberg's latest caprice is about starving NYC's poor as well as the City's homeless, I believe that we can both agree that Bloomberg MUST be impeached and removed from office ASAP.

Unfortunate, as my single Mother of 3 relied on such donations for our survival. I'm not sure the shelf life of the Kix cereal, powdered milk, and Spam we looked forward to dining on daily for several years, was much of a factor. Perhaps reforming the laws pertaining to child support would be a more practical first step. This could reduce the need for such programs that so many single mothers/fathers are forced to rely on to keep their children alive!

We have finally reached the ultimate state of being so open-minded that our brains have fallen out. I'm certain the homeless would much prefer to rummage through a dumpster than to have perfectly good food donated for their use. Politicians are useless. Leave us alone and we will be able to progress nicely without your interference.

First New Hampshire. In a small and scenic New England State those born and bred there have held tight over the years to much of the principle regarding an endowment by our creator with natural and unalienable right of non-interference - rights very often seen in history as 'privileges'... and especially by State officials.

Civil liberties for all, it's Clearly written in our Constitution. All the 'rest' can be voted on.

Taking apart brick by brick that locked down institution where the citizens are Kept forcibly by "The NannyState" ;)

Witness The Free State Project. Here go a bunch of patriotic Americans in a migration to help out and make a place that humankind has always dreamed of. New Hampshire is becoming now an Actual Free State where 'if you aren't hurting anyone or stealing', then the cops are your friends. A State where government is a service hired by the people for certain limited functions like police, national defense, regulation of interstate trade and adjudication of disagreements by court. Free State New Hampshire has Underway already this peaceful evolution to a just and free society... a society imagined by freedom fighters all throughout history.

The 'tree of liberty' is replanted in New Hampshire by patriots, and the Ron Paul movement has seeds enough for everyone across America. Spring arrives just on time.

New Hampshire first, and All of America is better served by patriots than tyrants.

I am a foodie and really care about the quality of what we put in our bodies but this is beyond sanity. There is no common sense left.

All I can guess it that the shelters must have too much food on hand and that everyone goes to bed at night with a full stomach and extra's in the refrigerator.

This was a very informative article and then: "Turning away donated food intended for the homeless is the height of left-wing, bureaucratic arrogance."

"Left-wing" does not mean what you apparently think it does. How about sticking to the horrible, senseless injustice you're reporting and keeping the pseudo-partisan bs to a minimum, especially when you're talking about a mayor who is known to consistently put the needs and desires of his wealthy and corporate cronies ahead of those of working people and the poor (hint-- that's not a "left-wing" agenda).

Laura of NY 2:32PM March 20, 2012

If Bloomberg had ever been poor and hungry he would have a different attitude. If he had ever spoken to people at these shelters and programs honestly, one-on-one, without a bevy of reporters standing around waiting to quote him, he might have a better understanding of what these small tokens mean to people in their circumstances. We've ceded leadership of our society to billionaires, millionaires, and their wannabe sycophants: we're getting just what we deserve.

Russell Trunzo of MT 1:28PM March 20, 2012

Bloomberg has to be the most heartless bas***d I have ever heard of. Where the Hell is his head at? I think the hunger of the homeless out weighs his nutritional concerns...It's not like they were being taking to McDonalds for Christs sakes.....I am really tired of the liberal idiot left telling people what they can and cannot eat, smoke, drink, or what pot to piss in...Time for Bloomberg to go...Time for New Yorkers to wake up...there's an idiot at the Helm of the great city...

Rick Allen of MI 12:41PM March 20, 2012

Ummmm....

Maybe we should demand that bureaucratic nannies revise the menus at the lavish state dinners at the White House.... Bulgar and hummus anyone?

Like I always say, "The trouble with the world is that Andy retired and left Barney in charge."

If you don't get it then you're too damn young to know anything anyway.

Words like outrageous and ignorant come to mind when one considers this poorly thought out policy.
