I could'nt run my household like this, how in the world does our goverment think they can.

Cutting spending by the same amount as raising the debt ceiling creates no harm. Capping spending to 18% of GDP (Currently 24% of GDP) again does no harm. Finally a balanced budget amendment does no harm. Any opposition to cut cap and balance is harmful and stupid.

The fact of the matter is that the bill passed by the house (and tabled by the Senate) only cuts $111 Billion dollars of spending and not the $2.3 Trillion that the debt ceiling needs to be raised by. Our current projected deficit for the year is $1.5 trillion.

For those of you too stupid to do the math or Democrats (same thing) it goes something like this. We already owe $12.00 (national debt of 12 trillion) This year we will spend $1.50 more than we have. We have to raise the debt ceiling $2.30 so we can pay our bills and on the interest we owe on the $12.00 debt. Unfortunately we are only cutting the our spending by 11 cents.

1. "what few sane republicans that are left in congress are being held hostage by the demented tea party followers"

You wish to talk like this ok. obama was held hostage by fractions of Democrat when passing obamacare. I can recall all the PORK necessary to gain votes for passage. Still "single payer" could not be negosciated. Those bad Democrats. We have Tea, Democrats have multitude of vested interest in their party. To finally pass obamacare had to give Presidental promise no government funds used for abortion to members of their own party. Of course that is garbage promise. Democrat have many Tea type splinter groups. Where are the sane Democrats brucetee ?

2. "the average american is becoming skeptical of the right wings talk of tax cuts and austerity and sacrifice."

Because of tax cuts for rich, rich pay more. There are tax cut for non-rich, but brucetee doesn't ever seem to mention them. Should we get rid of them too ? To be FAIR ? Rich sacriface much morewith Bush tax cuts.

3. "the president and the democrats need to stand firm on this issue."

obama plan did work so well ? Has any President been re-elected with unemployment higher than 8 %. Keep standing firm. Am certain we can match Greece. Bush daily debt was $$$ 1.5 billion a day. Obama 3 times higher. obama 2011 budge proposal would have added $$$ 9.5 more new debt in time according to CBO. A Democrat Party WET DREAM, more spending & more debt. If Republicans are in such bad shape what about Nov. 2, 2010. Why polls against raising debt ceiling. Nancy Pelosi joined us against a clean raising of debt ceiling, along with 81 more Democrats in House. Why a non-named Republican ties obama in a poll ?. History shows closer to election voters check their pocket books. Are they better off under obama ? obama ignored the polls and passed his bills. placed a deficit on Democrat seats held. In record numbers. Unemployment is going up not down lately. Senate has not passed a budget in 800 days, a Democrat Senate.

obama himself said you don't raise taxes in a recession. obama forgot he said it and doubt brucetee even knew obama ever said. If we are not still in recession, well, we are pretty close to it. Ask the millions of poor people brucetee...

what few sane republicans that are left in congress are being held hostage by the demented tea party followers.the average american is becoming skeptical of the right wings talk of tax cuts and austerity and sacrifice.because went the g.o.p. plan is scratched just below the surface,it is revealed that the tax cuts primarily are for the benefit of the high income people.

it is time for the bush tax cuts for those upper income people to be sunseted.

the president and the democrats need to stand firm on this issue.

Is there any reason the left, that includes the hacks in the press, are so adamant about raising taxes? It seems like their first priority to fix anything? It's just a class warfare and punish the rich thing isn't it libs? You don't really even care about increasing revenue or fixing the economy. You hacks need to be removed from power ASAP.

ABC/WASHINGTON POST poll released Tuesday indicates that more than six in ten Americans say any agreement on the deficit needs to include a combination of spending cuts AND new taxes.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/post-abc-news-poll-public-sees-dire-consequences-if-no-budget-deal/2011/07/19/gIQA4MQPOI_story_1.html

NBC/WSJ poll iindicates that 58 % of Americans support the president's proposal, which would reduce the federal deficit by $4 trillion dollars over the next decade by cutting federal spending, increasing taxes on corporations and the wealthy, and reducing the level of spending on Medicare.

CBS NEWS poll released Monday indicates that two-thirds of Americans say any agreement should include spending cuts AND tax increases, with only 28 % saying a deal should include spending cuts alone

QUINNIPIAC poll released last week indicated that two-thirds of the public supported a deal that included spending cuts AS WELL AS tax increases for wealthy Americans and corporations.

Two-thirds of GALLUP respondents said lawmakers who represent them in Congress should agree to a compromise plan to raise the debt ceiling, even if it's a proposal with which they disagree.

CNN/ORC International poll found 64% of those surveyed would prefer to trim the deficit by both spending cuts and tax increases

130 House Republicans who voted not to raise the debt ceiling unless Tea Party/Republican conditions were met voted 11 times to raise the debt ceiling for George Bush, WITHOUT requiring a single condition!

Consider this - 50% of discretionary spending currently is consumed by the two wars GOP & Bush started, another $400-$500 billion pays for interest on the debt that was created by Reagan-Bush-Bush BEFORE Obama was president and between 2001-2009 Bush doubled National Debt, doubled unemployment, doubled the trade gap and doubled the size of government. And, since current taxes are at lowest level since 1960's and there's just over $2 trillion available in the annual federal budget...is it any wonder we have to go over budget to meet obligations? Growth & jobs are the only answer, not cutting an already lean budget. But all Republicans have focused on since they took the House is blocking Obama's every move, pushing RW ideology, like fighting union bargaining & waging war on low income women's health, and talking deficit reduction....not an iota of effort on job growth. And Republican Govs are slashing jobs & adding to unemployment in order to give more tax cuts to corporations & the wealthy.

Senator Blunt has mis-represented the poll. Read it yourselves.

Yes John put that issue to rest early on. Finally, barry did...

Charles of WA, just heard stirring speech by President. Everything is MY SIDE FAULT. He didn't say was his fault we got into this mess. Bad, bad Bush had $$$ 1.5 billion debt per day. obama 3 times higher. Democrat controlled Congress & WH passed no budget due Oct. 1, 2010. Democrat Senate passed no budget proposal for 18 months. obama 2011 budget asked for $$$ 9.5 trillion in new debt over time according to CBO. When passing extensions for budget Democrat could only find $$$ 70 billion in cuts. Now obama says they are going the extra mile to accommodate us ?

Too bad democrat PAY AS YOU GO was just for SHOW. obama seems to have forgotten Democrat behavior when Democrat- in-charge. Of course TEA was demonized. He lost his Democrat Congress himself. Look in the mirror Prez. Learn from Nov. 2, 2011. Haven't yet.
