Obama Is to Blame for Soaring Gas Prices

The reason that the price of oil has risen is simply the speculators who again are grabbing hold of another Mid-East issue.

Speculators don't even consume the oil they are typically people who play with this commodity like Gold.

They should be spanked as they were the last time this occureed!!

They should not be allowed to enter into the purchase of this commodity if they are not the consuming oilo company.....PERIOD!!

while agree,in part,to what mr. roff and the other posters, say there is another reason for a large part of the problem.all the different "boutique blends"that the refineries must produce to meet different state and federal mandates.

there are something in the neighborhood of sixteen different blends that are made.

these change overs ad to the cost and lost production time.in my humble opinion the number of blends could be reduced by maybe half, without having any serious environmental impact.

this does not mean that there are not other"factors" that cause these price spikes.

just a thought.

Where does Canada get this oil ? Oil shale. “Estimated U.S. oil shale reserves total an astonishing 1.5 trillion barrels of oil – or more than five times the stated reserves of Saudi Arabia.”:

“U.S. Contains Enough Oil and Gas Reserves to Fuel Country for Decades, Petroleum Institute Says”

January 05, 2011

By Penny Starr

“For starters, there are vast reserves of domestic resources that are currently off-limits to exploration and production: billions of barrels of oil and trillions of cubic feet of natural gas ... onshore and off,” Gerard said. “And those estimates are most likely conservative given our past experience and new advanced technologies.”

"It is estimated that the United States has enough natural gas to fuel 100 percent of current domestic demand for at least 90 years. In addition, the United States produces about 2 billion barrels of crude oil per year, according to the API.”

“How Much Coal Does the U.S. Really Have?"

August 1, 2009

Sonal Patel

"In 2007, the EIA said the U.S. had a "demonstrated reserve base" of nearly 500 billion metric tons of coal, and it regarded 267 million metric tons — enough for 240 years — of that as "economically recoverable." But an extensive USGS analysis of Wyoming’s Gillette coal field — the nation’s largest and most prolific — released this June determined that of 182 billion metric tons of resources in place, less than 9.16 billion (or 6%) were found to be recoverable under "current technological and economic circumstances." This compares with an earlier assessment from 2002 by the USGS in which 20.87 billion metric tons were estimated to be recoverable. The USGS engineers, geologists, and economists explain the discrepancy is a result of using an "improved methodology," which incorporates a new dataset with 10 times as many data points as were used in previous assessments."

"In June, meanwhile, the Potential Gas Committee (PGC), a group of industry, government, and academic volunteers, said in a study that U.S. natural gas reserves were likely 1,836 trillion cubic feet. This assessment is up 39% — the highest increase on record — from the group’s estimate of 1,321 trillion cubic feet two years ago. "New and advanced exploration, well drilling and completion technologies are allowing us increasingly better access to domestic gas resources — especially unconventional gas — which, not all that long ago, were considered impractical or uneconomical to pursue," said John Curtis, a committee member and professor of geology at the Colorado School of Mines."

That's what the energy dept. says gas will cost us .

Are we as Americans really this stupid ? I can't believe it , you people must be . Fall for the green crap BS see what we get , screwed . Don't drill here , send billions overseas , employ them not us , bitch about the deficit , buy electric cars ( with no power system ) , is it just me or is everything really this upside down and people really this gullable and stupid ?

I mean like what the hey AMERICA , WAKE UP !!! Y'all been taken for a ride , to bad you drug alot of us with you ( thanks Al Gore and minions ).

'"Addicted to oil" is a phrase used by United States President George W. Bush in his State of the Union Address on January 31, 2006'

Some of the world's top producing oil fields are either at a peak or declining. Although it is possible more large oil fields will be discovered, it is becoming more and more difficult to drill from newer, and often more exotic locations.

Human population continues to expand ... we are now at 7 billion people. In the future, fossil fuels will be even higher priced than today. I'm happy that cars like the Nissan Leaf, Chevy Volt and others are available, or soon will be. With the Leaf, an overnight charge at your own home will take you 60-100 miles the next day. Not for long distances, but for daily commutes and errands, I think it's perfect.

The days of unlimited consumption are numbered. Doesn't it say something that both Obama and Bush are blamed for something largely outside their control? The U.S., nor other oil importing countries, do not dictate the price of oil. That is largely determined by supply and demand and set by the oil exporters.

Tim B of WA 7:06PM March 10, 2011

Mr Roff is absolutely correct. And anyone with an understanding of Economics could have told Obama and those halting production and exploration and Nuclear plant construction here at home, that this was going to happen; and in-fact many Did tell them. But they were to busy carrying the water for their Envioro/Progressive base to concern themselves with 'We the People' and acting in the best interest of the nation as a whole.

There is a simply economic reality those who stall the construction of Muclear power plants and refuse to open the oil and gas fields like ANWAR and the Destin Dome ignore at our cost. That simple reality is that Price is Set at the Margin, and thats been true from the time when men were trading rocks.

Here is how it works. When there is a small increase or decrease in the supply of a commodity where those dependent upon that commodity can change their needs quickly, any small change in supply will have a much greater effect upon the change in price, up or down. This 'Marginal Multiplier' is generally about 3-5 times the change in percentage of supply for common goods like flour, Sugar or Cotton. But for Oil, well it is many times that. For Oil this Multiplier effect can be ten times as high, and you are seeing it now, and have seen it in the past. This is what has caused a small @1-2% change in supply to translate into a 50+% increase in price... an increase 25 to 30 Times the change in Supply! the Happy side of this equation is that it works Both ways.

So consider what would have happened, and where wee would be if the energy supply in the US was increased 8-10 % thru domestic production. Something that is a realistic option if we used the resources we have...but dont because of politics.

I remember the Odd-Even days, the lines and the inflation and cost of the oil shortages in the 70's, and we are heading there again. Hell, even Jimmy Carter got it. That's why he sat aside ANWAR for drilling and production and started the Alaska Pipeline. He understood the fundamentals, and he understood wishes don't heat homes or get people to work.

Its past time those in Washington pulled their heads out of where ever they are hiding them, and started paying more attention to reality, and pay a lot less attention to special interests. Facts Do matter. We need to put our best foot forward...this is no time for Politics as usual.

Patrick of FL 6:56PM March 10, 2011

The author is correct in that the current energy crisis is to be blamed on President Obama. Our nation’s proven oil reserves are massive when you include the billions of barrels of oil in ANWAR and off our country’s outer continental shelf as well as the oil which is trapped in the shale rock in Colorado and the two oil fields which was recently discovered in the Bakken and Three Forks Oil Formations under North Dakota and portions of South Dakota and Montana. As a result, our nation has more oil than the Middle East and more than enough to meet our current and future energy needs. But President Obama and his allies in the Congress stand in the way of using this resource.

Moreover, President Obama is also to be blamed on the unrest and instability which is currently happening in the Middle East due to his Administraton being incompetent and undecisive when it comes to foreign policy. Additionally, President Obama's decisions to place greater restrictions on the exploration of domestic oil and gas in this country has led to an increase in oil prices. Add this to the strick environmental regulations which are preventing the construction of new refineries and the repair of old refineries which also adds to the cost of higher gas prices in this country.

America has the oil, what we don't have is the political leadership to drill for it and bring it to market. This and only this will send a strong message to OPEC that we as Americans are tired of being dependent on their oil. It is time to drill.

From a CNBC Interview See this amazing quote.

Barack Obama: I think that… we have been slow to move in a better direction when it comes to energy usage. And the president, frankly, hasn’t had an energy policy.* And as a consequence we’ve been consuming energy as if it’s infinite. We now know that our demand is badly outstripping supply with China and India growing as rapidly as they are.

I am an engineer so I apologize for this but energy is basically infinite as physics teaches us ….. E=mC^2. All mass is energy, this is the basis for chemical and nuclear reactions. I did the calcs which I won’t bore you with but the sun would burn out over 10 billion of times over before we consume the energy we are standing on. That doesn’t include the outside sources of energy.

CNBC’s John Harwood: So could the (high) oil prices help us?

Barack Obama: I think that I would have preferred a gradual adjustment. The fact that this is such a shock to American pocketbooks is not a good thing. But if we take some steps right now to help people make the adjustment, first of all by putting more money in their pockets, but also by encouraging the market to adapt to these new circumstances more rapidly, particularly U.S. automakers…

I would have preferred a gradual adjustment. What the heck is this insanity? The huge burden on our economy is causing people to loose their houses and cars. Sales in recreational products have plummeted (wait until the news comes out next month) and all he cares about is government control and the possibility of future global warming based entirely on shaky simplistic computer models.

How the hell is half of America ready to vote for this insanity?

I have decided that I am going to set up a page on my blog with links to global warming resources to help people find the information they need to make an informed decision.

Even if the global warming alarmists are right (which the data doesn’t support), the rest of the world is expanding their usage of CO2 emitting technologies at an unstoppable pace. America cannot stop it with todays technology. The only chance for the environmentalist wackos to really achieve their stated goals is to keep energy cheap and allow the investment in research to continue. If they kill the US economy they are shooting themselves in the foot.

Eventually people will move away from oil and gas there will be no choice, but it doesn’t need to be now, give us 200 years or so and see where we are.

Ignorance is our most expensive commodity.

If Obama would get on national TV and state that he has directed his Energy Sec to issue drilling permits, off and on shore, would instantly have an effect on old prices. Supply and demand is perhaps one of the most fundamental concepts of economics, hello. And don't give me this crap about how long it would take, oil is sold and traded in FUTURES.

Larry of CA 5:54PM March 10, 2011

Probably the dumbest article published in a very long time, even for a Bush apologist. The author seems to think the oil and commodity prices rise and fall solely on whether U.S. energy allows for offshore drilling. Gases price spikes are happening because of speculation over the Middle East tensions, pretty simple. We could drill all we want off U.S. shores, but it wouldn't provide nearly enough energy to meet demand.

While its typical that a Fox news hack would be ethnocentric, its amazing that an article about rising gas prices doesn't mention anything about the current geopolitics going on overseas.
