As disturbing as the tragedy in Tucson is to the national psyche, what is even more of a concern is the way in which some elected officials and commentators are using it as an excuse to call for curbs on our precious freedom of speech.

It was a deviously subtle way to announce the Obama administration was coming to an end, to be replaced by the third Clinton administration.

The current chairman, former Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael Steele, wants the job for another two years, but the criticism leveled against him by some members of the committee over what they perceive as his unsteady, even rocky, leadership makes his re-election unlikely, say those who are counting votes.

Over in the House the new GOP majority has committed to post its rules package online so that every interested American can see it and, hopefully, better understand how the chamber will operate over the next two years. Things in the Senate, however, are not as clear.
