Is Gay Marriage Good for America?

"Dismissing the opposition to gay marriage as mere bigotry on the order of religious or racial prejudice, as Walker’s decision seemed in my judgment to do, is an insult to the American electorate."

You obviously did not read Walker's opinion, or did not fully understand it. He said that people's opposition to same sex marriage, whether fueled by animus or not, is not a justification to deny rights to people. Also, if as you say it is unlikely that the Supreme Court will uphold his decision, then it is likely that the Supreme Court will be ignoring centuries of constitutional law and judicial precedent.

And where did you get this "300 years" number. Our country hasn't even existed for more than 250 years, and I can't think of any significant events that occurred in 1710 that made the family unit what it is now. But then again, if you want to go back to the days when women were property and blacks couldn't marry whites because they were still considered to be inhuman slave labor, well then you're crazy! Marriage has changed significantly in the past 300 years, so don't pretend it's remained static in any sense.
