"abuse, fraud, misuse "

It would be interesting to see how much of the amount remaining after taxes was lost to "abuse, fraud, misues" in the private sector as well. How much of the turkey's cost went to executive bonuses and perks? How much to fuel the corporate jet? How much for expensive artwork in the executive offices. How much of the actual labor was done by illegal aliens? How much went to Political Action Commitees to further the corporate agenda?

Government doesn't have a lock on waste, fraud or abuse, in fact I would bet that most fraud in government programs is committed by private enterprise gaming the system (see Enron), not government employees. At least the intention of government is generally good, even if the results aren't always perfect. The only goal of most corporations is to get as much of your money as they can while giving you as little as possible in return. Nothing really wrong with that, but don't be naive and think only government is screwing you.

We're funding our government and it's still pretty cheap. I'm not rich, but I didnt' have any trouble buying all the ingredients for a feast.

Republicans do not espouse the concept of "No" taxation. What they despise is the lack of stewardship by supposed public servants.

Tell me JB of MI what "public good" do you benefit from when your tax dollars are spent on abuse, fraud, misuse or to see your hard earned money taxed to pay for turtle tunnels, dirigible flight studies, nat'l endowment of the arts, horse condom research, sex studies, etc?

Do you find it honorable to have tax cheats Rangle, Geithner, et al, point grubby, fat fingers at you and tell you to put more in the public trough? Meanwhile, they turn around and give friends and family members sweetheart deals that drain millions of tax dollars.

Tell me you get a warm tingle down your leg knowing you fund a plethora of redundant and massively expensive government "Social" programs, most of which are inadequate and disfunctional?

The idea of taxation has gone beyond sewage, roads, national defense, bridges, and government, JB. Taxes are now used to "re-allocate" wealth in America and to fund special interest, nepotism, and sweetheart contracts. That's what "true" Republicans despise.

I'm not so jaded as to think that Dems are totally to blame. I blame both for the callous disregard they've shown the hands that feeds them.

A commenter here writes: "without your hated government and their dreaded taxes" we would not survive -- and mentions "Perhaps you like have water and sewer systems, public transportation, roads, schools, electricity, just to name a few things" -- whereupon one must consider, too, the taxes taken from the thanksgiving dinner that is given to the eaters of the dinner in the form of food stamps, tax credits, government bureaucrats, price supports to keep the price of food high, corruption and fraud, economic development money to rich sports team owners, bailouts of overpaid bank execs who made bad decisions, ACORN for various fraud, the climatologists who fudged the data, the terrorist trial in NYC for a man who hates America but demands American Constitutional Rights, interest on the debt for expenses not covered by taxes, and for any number of transfer programs from one set of diners to another set with an accompanying government overhead charge. All of these, too, are worthwhile, ahem, no doubt. And so - out of the 40% in taxes, let's keep ten or so percent for the water to wash the dishes with, but chuck the 30% that goes to the utter nonsensical part of government.
