The disturbing part of this is that the US govt is ignoring the

principles of free enterprise and attempting to salvage a company that--in spite of lucrative contracts with the US govt

itself (e.g. Hummers..)--has gone broke. It seems to be inconceivable to many that this corporation failed because

it has grown fat, incompetent, and--obviously--insolvent.

So the next time you buy a car (and who would buy from GM?)

you can puzzle over the fact that the company you buy from

is competing against a govt subsidized company. But is that

really competition? It would seems that the term has been

redefined somewhat.

As for the govt zeroing in on Republican dealerships, I

wonder:

- do dealerships invariably give money to a political party?

To what purpose?

- wouldn't most dealerships tend to be Republican anyway?

- didn't GM execs (and not the govt) choose the dealers to

be closed?

- is this issue worth 2 cents vs. the issue of dismantling,

or at least making a mockery of--the free enterprise system?

This is what happens when you live in a dictatorship. If you voted for Obama--Congratualation!!-you got what you wanted!!!!

Well, given that when you look at dealerships as a whole the general breakdown is 66-75% donate Republican and 25-33% donate to Democrats, are you really that shocked that something like a hair over 3/4ths of closed dealerships are Republican donors?

When you factor in their will be a higher number of rural dealerships in the poor performing catagory, and democrats are more prevalent in urban areas, the number seems to be about right.

The work is being done on which dealerships were closed and why, both from a statistical standpoint and from anecdotal. There's no way to know why these dealerships were closed, because the criteria we've been told by the White House doesn't fit the pattern of closures.

The commenter who claims the closed dealers only sold 4000 cars is a flat out liar - one wonders if that's a paid Axelrod staffer or just someone who parrots what they read on left wing blogs.

Some very well connected Democrats have improved their position in these closings and wiped out their competitors. In Missouri, the pattern was strange enough to have both Senator Bond (R) and Senator McCaskill (D) send a letter asking for the criteria. If a Democratic US Senator closely allied with the Obama White House can't get answers she will take public, then the answers aren't good.

Notice that the Obama administration was comfortable altering bankruptcy law to protect unions, but they demand the shutdown of a large Republican constituency as a condition of helping Chrysler and GM.

The more you look into this, the more you start wondering just who is making decisions and why. We'll keep digging, even if paid commenters try to pretend there is no story.

Good column, Peter. You're asking the right questions.

Could you be any more bias? Did you even go to college or study journalism? It is the Yomama Obama that gave the car companies....oops, I mean the UAW, billions of taxpayer money. Those companies should have just been allowed to fail. Now, GM goes into bankruptcy and gets another $30B from Obama. How the hell is that bankruptcy? Now we have Yomama having 70% and 60% ownership in an industry that it does not understand nor need to be involved with.

If you want to look at why the economy failed. Start with housing and loans...then go immediately to Barney Franks and Chris Dodd and the rest of the socialists on the Hill. Go out to youtube, search on Barney Franks and see his comments on Freddie and Fannie financial status. If the dems would understand that NOT EVERYONE can or should own a home, then we would not be in this mess. Yes, speculators also are to blame, but it is mostly mortgages to low income people that could not afford them. Then they failed. Banks should also take the blame for allowing these people to get loans. I would go after loan officers, like Obama did to the GM ceo.

But Ruff, if you want to be so slanted, try and at least be a little more subtle. How corrupt can the media bet?

Me, I am going to buy foreign cars. Let the UAW rot!!!!
