How Republicans Can Win the Future
Tweet Share on Facebook May 3, 2013 CommentTo paraphrase Homer Simpson, Lauren Howie was the cause of and possibly solution to Republicans' struggle to build a coalition of voters that can again win the White House.

Republican Outreach to Minorities Could Use Professional Help
Tweet Share on Facebook May 3, 2013 CommentThis author has been pushing since 2008 for the Republican Party to go back to its roots as a "big tent" institution. Instead, the party has continued to alienate whole swaths of the electorate. In the 2012 elections, the GOP was trounced in African American, Asian and Hispanic voting blocks, specifically by a three to one margin among Hispanics.

Bloomberg's Nanny State Food Policy Is Out of Control
Tweet Share on Facebook May 3, 2013 CommentAs many people have found out to their chagrin, the story floating around the Internet about New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg being denied a second slice of pepperoni at a Brooklyn pizza parlor is satire.

Biden Is Right About Washington, D.C. Voting Rights
Tweet Share on Facebook May 3, 2013 CommentVice President Joe Biden is right: There should be two senators from the District of Columbia, not to mention at least one voting member of the U.S. House. Americans living in the U.S. capital, in other words, should have the basic rights of citizenship that they are currently denied.

Big Government Is Not the Answer
Tweet Share on Facebook May 3, 2013 CommentThe most interesting poll results I've read lately: “In terms of being a good citizen, 67 percent of voters believe it is more important to do volunteer work for church and community organizations than it is to get involved in politics and political campaigns. Only 16 percent disagree and put political involvement first,” according to a report today from Rasmussen polling.

Google's Geeky Glass Is Technology at Its Laziest
Tweet Share on Facebook May 3, 2013 CommentWhen I was a kid, we had this idea that when we were grown – certainly, by the 21st century – we'd all be traveling on moving sidewalks and getting around town with little jetpacks attached to our backs. There were two bases for this fantasy. One, we were all watching way too many episodes of "The Jetsons," and two, we assumed, as many people still do, that technology would continue to develop at a constant pace and that new technology is always a good thing.

May Jobs Number, Unemployment, the Sequester and Tax Hike Nonsense
Tweet Share on Facebook May 3, 2013 CommentToday’s jobs report – while including the encouraging statistic that the unemployment rate is down to 7.5 percent, its lowest point in four and a half years – feels a lot like a rerun. Private sector growth was decent, but not great, while the public sector again shed jobs (11,000 this time, including another 1,500 in local education).

On Gun Control, Alabama State Senate Treads Crazy Nullification Path
Tweet Share on Facebook May 2, 2013 CommentI don't have a lot to add to Steve Benen's report that Alabama's state senate Tuesday passed legislation that would nullify federal gun control laws. Steve uncharacteristically understates: "Measures like these continue to make me uncomfortable, largely because they're premised on a discredited legal theory decided by the Civil War."

It's Far Too Early for 2016 Presidential Speculation
Tweet Share on Facebook May 2, 2013 CommentThe talking heads certainly wasted little time before training their sights the 2016 election. Less than four months after President Barack Obama was sworn in for his second term, the chatter about who might succeed him has already begun.

Republican Obstruction of Obama Won't Halt Social Change
Tweet Share on Facebook May 2, 2013 CommentPolitics isn't supposed to be personal. It gets that way, of course, particularly in the heat of the waning weeks of a campaign, when candidates throw all sorts of personal (euphemistically called "character") accusations against each other. But once the candidates get into office, there is a reasonable expectation that they will make decisions based on their own judgment, on the desires of their constituents or even according to the demands of special interest groups that have successfully pressured or intimidated lawmakers.
