It's Time for Marion Barry to Retire
Tweet Share on Facebook March 29, 2013 CommentI've done it before and I'm doing it again: I'm calling for D.C. City Councilman Marion Barry to resign. Over the years, there were charges of tax evasion, traffic violations, government contracts for girlfriends, and cocaine use. A year ago, he insulted Asian-American shopowners, then in his apology to them, insulted Polish-Americans as well.

Rep. Young Shows GOP Still Has a Ways to Go With Latino Voters
Tweet Share on Facebook March 29, 2013 CommentThe Republican party, seeking to expand its potential base, is planning significant outreach to Latino citizens. They probably shouldn't put Representative Don Young in the ads.

New York City Looks Ready to Pass Paid Sick Days Law
Tweet Share on Facebook March 29, 2013 CommentAfter three years of delay and obstruction, lawmakers in New York City Thursday finally crafted a deal that will require Big Apple businesses to provide their workers with paid sick days. The final hurdle to a deal—City Council speaker and mayoral hopeful Christine Quinn—finally succumbed to extensive pressure and will bring the measure to a vote. (Mayor Michael Bloomberg is opposed to the bill, but the council has enough votes to override his veto.)

Montana Governor Vetoes Gun Control Nullification Bill
Tweet Share on Facebook March 28, 2013 CommentScore one for modernity. Earlier this week, Montana's legislature passed a nullification bill—a piece of legislation which would have forbidden Big Sky law enforcement from enforcing any new assault weapons ban or ban on high capacity magazines. Steve Bullock, the state's Democratic governor, announced today that he was vetoing the bill, in part on the grounds that it is "unnecessary political theater." (That would be because it aimed to nullify laws that don't even exist yet.)

Liberal Media Hypocrisy on Bloomberg's Gun Control Ads
Tweet Share on Facebook March 28, 2013 CommentEven the most casual political observer might remember the collective outrage from the left last year as conservative billionaires like Sheldon Adelson and the Koch Brothers dared to exercise their constitutional rights and engage in the political process.

Immigration Reform Is a Start for the GOP, Not a Panacea
Tweet Share on Facebook March 28, 2013 CommentBoth political parties are having fits trying to solve the problem of illegal immigration in a way that proves to be a vote winner. The Democrats, at least as far as the conventional wisdom goes, have a leg up on the GOP because they are much "kinder and gentler" to the American Latino community than the Republicans.

David Petraeus, Mark Sanford Should Stop Apologizing for Their Affairs
Tweet Share on Facebook March 28, 2013 CommentDavid Petreaus is sorry. So is Mark Sanford. So was David Letterman and Tiger Woods and a slew of other men who had extramarital affairs. Why on Earth should we care?

Gay Marriage Opponents Aren't Trying to Protect Marriage
Tweet Share on Facebook March 28, 2013 CommentIn Tuesday's oral arguments over whether California's ban on gay marriage is unconstitutional, a few of the liberal Supreme Court justices took aim at one of the central arguments made by gay marriage opponents and Charles Cooper, the attorney representing the proponents of California's Proposition 8, the ban on marriage. Justice Kagan asked Cooper if the government could bar couples over the age of 55 from marrying, on the assumption that they are infertile.

Gay Marriage Advocates Must Start Courting Republicans
Tweet Share on Facebook March 28, 2013 CommentGay rights activists will probably not see the 39 state bans on same-sex marriage declared unconstitutional when the Supreme Court's issues its ruling on Hollingsworth vs. Perry, the challenge to California's Proposition 8. The audio transcripts reveal an inescapable point: The justices are reluctant to weigh in on the debate. The case will probably be dismissed on procedural grounds.
