The FBI Sabotages Petraeus—And Obama
Tweet Share on Facebook November 13, 2012 CommentOn the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, for remembrance of the Great War to end all wars, we knew that the FBI spied on the chief spy. Isn't that great?

Let Alabama, Texas, and Florida Secede From the United States
Tweet Share on Facebook November 12, 2012 CommentAs the holidays approach, many of us are faced with a seasonal conundrum: the case of some annoying relative who persists in making various demands on the holiday celebrations ("I won't come if you serve murdered meat at Thanksgiving!"' or "I'm not coming if you invite my ex's new spouse; they've only been married 22 years"). If, as the brilliant novelist Mary Karr has observed, a dysfunctional family is a family with more than one person in it, many of us are faced with these little annual theatrics. And we wonder whether to appease—yet again—or draw the line in the mashed potatoes for once and for all.
And so perhaps it's time to say this to those residents of (mostly southern) states filing petitions to secede from the United States: Oh, just go, then.

How Republicans Can Start to Fix Their Women Problem
Tweet Share on Facebook November 9, 2012 CommentLike many Republicans, I was surprised that President Obama was re-elected. Speaker John Boehner said to Diane Sawyer last night. Most of us agree that would include learning to speak to women.

Romney's Defeat Comes Down to Obama's Chicago-Style Tactics
Tweet Share on Facebook November 9, 2012 CommentAnyone who cares about electoral politics and who has not yet read Michael Barone's piece in Friday's Wall Street Journal needs to do so. Now the dean of American political reporters and analysts, Barone writes about American elections better than anyone else. He may not always be right in his predictions—which he seldom makes—but his analysis is the best there is.

Mitt Romney Was Blind to Real America
Tweet Share on Facebook November 9, 2012 CommentThe question "Has [fill-in-the-blank] lost touch with reality?" has become such a hackneyed and cheap phrase that it's lost almost all meaning. And yet, it's a legitimate question to ask of Mitt Romney and his campaign.

Chuck Schumer: Karl Rove Should Be Fired
Tweet Share on Facebook November 8, 2012 CommentChuck Schumer thinks Sheldon Adelson should go Donald Trump on Karl Rove. No, the senior New York senator doesn't think that Adelson should ask for Rove's birth certificate—he thinks the conservative casino billionaire should tell the GOP strategist: You're fired.

Why McCaskill, Heitkamp, Brown, and Heller Won
Tweet Share on Facebook November 8, 2012 CommentYou can hire pollsters and high-paid consultants. You can get rich people to fund super PACs to bolster your campaign. You can do all sorts of micro-targeting and other so-called strategies to make yourself appeal to different kinds of voters. But if there's one heartening thing made very clear this past Tuesday, it's that candidates matter.
