On Todd Akin, Mitt Romney Shows the Leadership Barack Obama Lacks
Tweet Share on Facebook August 23, 2012 CommentThe Democrats, especially President Barack Obama, are probably quite pleased that Missouri Republican Senate candidate Rep. Todd Akin stuck his foot so far into his mouth this week that you can see the outline of his toes through the back of his pants.

Focus on Abortion Is Rocking the Romney-Ryan Boat
Tweet Share on Facebook August 23, 2012 CommentThe Republican National Convention should be clear sailing for Mitt Romney. The GOP gathering is the party's chance to launch the good ship Romney on national TV. The addition of Rep. Paul Ryan to the ticket gave the Republicans a chance to focus the campaign on the economy, which is the issue voters care about most. But Hurricane Todd may blow the SS Romney/Ryan off course. Heading into the GOP convention, the focus of campaign 2012 is exactly where Republicans didn't want it to be. The spotlight is on abortion. They just can't help themselves.

Texas Judge's Crazed Concerns Show Obama Still Faces Racism
Tweet Share on Facebook August 23, 2012 CommentA community always has its share of conspiracy theorists, of racists and xenophobes, and just out-and-out crazies. These people can generally be safely ignored. But what do we do when the nutcase is a judge, and the talk carries an inherent threat to the nation's first biracial president?

Who Is Kept From the Polls by Voter ID Laws?
Tweet Share on Facebook August 22, 2012 CommentA homeless man, Peter Bis, who had become a friendly fixture on Capitol Hill for commuters and Hill workers, died this week of an apparent heart attack. He remembered people's names, asked about their kids, and always had something to say about current events—he knew a lot, acquaintances told the Washington Post, since he voraciously read newspapers he would fish out of the trash. He said some crazy things, too—that he was being persecuted by the government, that he had been Princess Diana's lover, that he was an alien from another galaxy. He even wore a baseball cap lined with lead and fixed with red lights, the Post noted. For this behavior and utterances, Bis was diagnosed as schizophrenic.

Todd Akin Proves There Is a War on Women
Tweet Share on Facebook August 22, 2012 CommentTodd Akin. It's a name all Americans know today due to his remark that victims of "legitimate rape" rarely get pregnant. This offended me and so many others. But perhaps even more so, victims of rape and victims who were impregnated by their attackers.

Left Smears Philanthropy of Kochs and Other Free Market Activists
Tweet Share on Facebook August 21, 2012 CommentAmerica has a funny relationship with those some might call "the super wealthy." On the one hand, they are often lionized for their charity and for the role they play in the civic and cultural life of the nation. On the other there are those, like President Barack Obama, who accuse them of "not paying their fair share," as though their voluntary giving, while not part of their tax payments, counts for nothing.

Phyllis Diller Proved Women Can Be Funny, Too
Tweet Share on Facebook August 21, 2012 CommentThere's often a certain ugliness to humor, especially the sort that shocks a little bit before evoking peals of laughter. And maybe that's why Phyllis Diller, who died this week at 95, was so successful at a time when women were not welcomed in the world of stand-up comedy.

New Book Defends Barack Obama's Stimulus
Tweet Share on Facebook August 21, 2012 CommentMichael Grunwald's fascinating new book, The New New Deal, is bound to be a lasting word on Barack Obama's presidency. It closely examines the early stimulus spending bill and argues that it, well, pretty much saved us from a free-falling depression. What we got instead, a Great Recession with endemic joblessness, was something to be grateful for. Sort of. That was never a message the American people were going to hear, much less love.

After 'Legitimate Rape' Comment, Todd Akin Should Resign From Race
Tweet Share on Facebook August 20, 2012 CommentOn Sunday morning U.S. Rep. Todd Akin gave an interview on Missouri television in which he opined that victims of "legitimate rape" need not worry about conceiving a child as the result of being assaulted.
