Tweet Share on Facebook June 27, 2012 CommentThe drama and disruption at the University of Virginia appears to be on its way to healing, with the university governing board voting unanimously to reinstate popular UVA President Teresa Sullivan. The battle was over money and mission, with the members of the board (made up of businesspeople) taking Sullivan to task for not moving quickly enough on reforms—reforms Sullivan said involved making deep cuts in education.

What the GOP Should Do After Supreme Court's Healthcare Ruling
Tweet Share on Facebook June 26, 2012 CommentIt looks pretty clear that the Supreme Court's long-awaited decision on the constitutionality of President Barack Obama's signature healthcare reform initiative will be issued on Thursday. What the court will say is anybody's guess, there being a multitude of possible outcomes ranging from the entire act being upheld to the whole thing being struck down as unconstitutional and unworkable.

Scalia, Holder, and Partisan Politics Run Amok
Tweet Share on Facebook June 26, 2012 CommentA little rivalry among the branches of government is normal, and arguably healthy. The legislative branch doesn't like the executive branch telling it how to spend money (since Congress likes to make those decisions on its own). The executive branch likes to blame Congress (sometimes with good reason) for being unable to make compromises and pass even basic legislation. And there is often a little resentment of the judicial branch, those "unelected" types who are supposed to weigh in on the sense and constitutionality of a law, regardless of pressure from interest groups or hysteria from constituents.

Stop Blaming Teachers for Misbehaving Kids
Tweet Share on Facebook June 25, 2012 CommentThank heaven for kids like Wallace Kubler-Kramely, a 15-year-old in East Amherst, N.Y., who made a video "We All Get Older," which is a tribute to the parents and grandparents and other older folks who have taught him and guided him in his life. Wallace's sweet video not only restores some faith in young people after middle-schoolers in nearby Greece, N.Y. tormented a 68-year-old school bus monitor. But it helps underscore what I have always found to be the more common values system in my native western New York. I do believe there are more kids out there like Wallace than there are the bullies who went after Karen Klein.

Congress Should Press Obama and Eric Holder on 'Fast and Furious'
Tweet Share on Facebook June 21, 2012 CommentThe specter of the late Richard M. Nixon hovers over President Barack Obama's White House like a low-lying storm cloud. Over time he has become increasingly contemptuous of Congress and the Supreme Court over their refusal to cooperate in his effort to "transform" America.

The Bullied Bus Monitor and Where Kids Are Learning Their Manners
Tweet Share on Facebook June 21, 2012 CommentI used to think it was a sure sign of middle age when someone complained about "kids today." But now it seems like a serious reflection on the sort of generation poised to become the nation's leaders someday.
