Mitt Romney Brought Bain Capital Criticisms on Himself
Tweet Share on Facebook May 23, 2012 CommentMitt Romney's work at Bain Capital is "fair game," as the Obama administration phrases it. Criticism of Romney's work there is not an assault on capitalism, nor is it "proof" of the absurd contention by foes of the president that he is a socialist (the bigger issue, anyway, is what passes for a liberal in our era of hyper-conservative resurgence).

Mitt Romney's Bain History Deserves Scrutiny
Tweet Share on Facebook May 23, 2012 CommentI have been a talk show host for 23 years. If you were hiring me for a radio job, would you want to look at my resume? My work history? I'm sure the answer is yes. So why are so many people, both left and right, attacking the president for pointing out a company which Mitt Romney founded and ran, Bain Capital?

Mitt Romney Can’t Afford to Lose Obama's Bain Game
Tweet Share on Facebook May 22, 2012 CommentCory Booker, the highly regarded mayor of Newark, N.J., did do Mitt Romney a favor with his remarks Sunday on Meet the Press. But it's not the favor Romney's campaign probably perceives.

Rutgers Bullying Case About Gay Rights, Privacy
Tweet Share on Facebook May 22, 2012 CommentThe relatively brief jail sentence imposed on a Rutgers University student who tormented his gay roommate has caused debate, even within the gay community: Was 30 days too few for Dharun Ravi, who secretly filmed his roommate, Tyler Clementi, in a sexual encounter with another man, then encouraged others to watch the video? Or was Ravi just a basic, immature college kid whose stupid prank should not be blamed for the distress of Clementi, who committed suicide after the episode?

The House of Representatives Is the Scariest Circus on Earth
Tweet Share on Facebook May 22, 2012 CommentA comment in The Nation published in the Gilded Age noted a circus clown telling people the best days of the circus were over. We've noticed the same thing lately, bemoaning a scarcity of clown talent at the circus. What's to be done? One reason given, then and now: Fewer youths are running away from home to join the circus.

Obama Discovers Lobbyists Are Hard to Get Rid Of
Tweet Share on Facebook May 21, 2012 CommentThe Washington Post had a story yesterday, which is generating some Internet buzz, detailing how often registered lobbyists visit the Obama administration. It illustrates both the intractability of the system as well the limitations of campaign rhetoric.

Obama Catholic Contraception Fight Isn't Over As Church Sues
Tweet Share on Facebook May 21, 2012 CommentMonday the Catholic Church filed 12 different federal lawsuits against the administration on behalf of 43 Catholic dioceses and organizations ranging from local Catholic Charities to parish schools, hospitals, and colleges. The lawsuits are in response to last year's ruling by the Department of Health and Human Services, known as the HHS, which mandates all healthcare plans must provide sterilizations and abortion-inducing contraceptives for free, with an exemption for churches only, not broader religious organizations. Only churches which serve solely the members of the same faith are exempt; religious organizations which serve the general public are not covered—the most narrowly defined "conscience clause" ever adopted under federal law.

Talking About Jeremiah Wright Is the Wrong Way to Beat Obama
Tweet Share on Facebook May 21, 2012 CommentLike their focus on whether or not President Barack Obama was born in the United States, those Republican operatives who are once again focused on his relationship with the Rev. Jeremiah Wright are wrong.

Don’t Believe Obama on Income Inequality
Tweet Share on Facebook May 21, 2012 CommentYou've heard it a thousand times at least. The incomes of middle class Americans have stagnated in recent decades. Those of the rich—the 1 percent—have soared. It is a very compelling, very troubling, and very widely believed observation and, according to three economists from Cornell and Indiana universities, not true. If they are right—and their analysis is extremely thorough—the economic argument of the entire Obama presidential campaign is founded on an untruth.

Facebook's Stock Flop Is an Allegory for Facebook Itself
Tweet Share on Facebook May 21, 2012 CommentFacebook's public debut on the stock market ended up being a financial allegory for the social networking site itself. Buzz-spreaders do not necessarily ended up becoming actual investors. That's not surprising, considering that your Facebook friends are not really your friends.
