But because the political climate is so volatile I didn't dare write this before the ball went down in Times Square. So without any further delay here is my top 10 list of the most important national political stories of 2011. As a tribute to David Letterman who is a big player in presidential politics, the list counts down from Nos. 10 to 1. The more important the event is, the less explanation it needs.

Hillary Clinton and Sen. John McCain supporters. Who can forget the famous a "thrill goes up my leg" reference by one journalist ? Of course, as President Obama quickly found out, the shelf life of gushing praise can be measured in weeks, days, or even hours after winning an election.

Iowa doesn’t feel like a place where big money and fancy suits win electoral contests (and it’s not; one of the most endearing characteristics about former Republican Rep. Jim Leach was that he wore sweaters under his suitcoats). But without the down-home nature of Midwestern Iowa setting the mood, the caucuses by very definition feel disturbingly un-American.
