Wyden-Ryan Medicare Reform Shows the New Healthcare Consensus
Tweet Share on Facebook December 19, 2011 Comment (5)I have seen the future, and its name is Orydencare.
We saw a glimpse of this emergent system with the presentation last week of Democratic Sen. Ron Wyden and Republican Rep. Paul Ryan's plan to reform Medicare.

Newt Gingrich’s Dictatorial View of 'Activist Judges'
Tweet Share on Facebook December 19, 2011 Comment (19)In 2009, Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich slammed President Obama for shaking the hand of Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez at the Summit of the Americas. White House officials at the time noted that it was just a handshake at an international meeting of world leaders, and did not constitute any sanction of Chavez's rather disturbing behavior. But Gingrich said Obama was boosting the "enemies of America."

Tweet Share on Facebook December 16, 2011 Comment (18)It's beginning to look very much like independent voters will determine the outcome of the 2012 election, just like they did in 2008 and 2010.

The Case for More Republican Presidential Debates
Tweet Share on Facebook December 16, 2011 Comment (10)Republican debates, R.I.P. The last one before the primary season begins was held Thursday night, and I have to say that while I didn't watch every single one, I watched most of them and it was great fun. They were entertaining for the most part, filled with all kinds of characters—both in the candidates and the interviewers—and the debates themselves certainly served a purpose.

The Republican Clown Show Rolls On
Tweet Share on Facebook December 16, 2011 Comment (17)The payroll tax cut that Speaker of the House John Boehner called "chicken shit" in the GOP House caucus would save the average American $1,000 per year. A grand doesn't mean much to the speaker or his banker and billionaire buddies but to working families that's a lot of money. John Boehner's idea of soaking the rich is to jump in a hot tub with them after 18 holes.

Ethanol Subsidies Are a Test for Congress, Obama Administration
Tweet Share on Facebook December 15, 2011 Comment (12)It's hard not to have an opinion on ethanol, especially in Congress. Basically you're either for it or you're against it—as least as far as the way it is treated as a matter of public policy is concerned. As an industry, ethanol is heavily subsidized, its use in the U.S. fuel supply is mandated and millions if not tens or hundreds of millions in taxpayer dollars are spent each year trying to find ways to produce it more cheaply and from something other than feeds stocks like corn.

Why Running a Business Is Different Than Running the Government
Tweet Share on Facebook December 15, 2011 Comment (3)Lawmakers are very skilled and responsible at reducing and eliminating debt—as long as it's campaign debt. The federal budget? Not so much.

Obama, Democrats Blink in Payroll Tax Battle
Tweet Share on Facebook December 15, 2011 Comment (13)It's almost Christmas time again and Washington is right where it is supposed to be around this time of year: at a standstill. Democrats and Republicans remain far apart in negotiations over the payroll tax and annual spending bills. The fight is between Democrats who are campaigning on class warfare themes and Republicans who remain solidly behind the rhetoric of job creation. And in this annual stare down over politics and policy, we just saw the Democrats blink.
