Media Shouldn't Confuse Civility With Bipartisanship
Tweet Share on Facebook February 3, 2011 Comment (3)In the movie Chocolat, a whimsical shopkeeper whips up mysterious concoctions in her kitchen that somehow manage to solve the problems of everyone who tastes them. When you see it, you can tell the filmmakers are convinced their audience will be captivated, watching in breathless wonder as the story unfolds. Personally, I have never hated a movie more. But the critics ate it up. I think it was even nominated for an Academy Award.
I’m beginning to think that the media is arriving at a Chocolat moment of its own as it looks on in breathless wonder at the newfound “civility” on Capitol Hill. High praise and hosannas all around. But folks, it’s just not that great. Here’s why:

Republican Healthcare Repeal Push Hurts Mitt Romney in 2012
Tweet Share on Facebook February 2, 2011 Comment (13)Mitt Romney might find it a bit awkward to conduct the usual endorsement and strategy meetings with fellow Republicans this campaign season.
Romney hasn’t announced he is running for president, though he has been raising money for months toward that potential jump. Tweet Share on Facebook February 2, 2011 Comment (49)Few in America had heard about the third-richest Americans, brothers David and Charles Koch, until just recently. Aside from David Koch’s gifts to the Lincoln Center in New York and the naming of a theater after him, few outside a small, elite circle would recognize the name or know how to pronounce it. (“Koch” as in “coke”)

The sheer attention the mere possibility of the businessman-turned governor-turned diplomat is attracting says much about the current state of the race and even more about what the party’s primary voters may be seeking in their next presidential nominee.

Glenn Beck's Egypt Protest Theories Show He's Finally Lost It
Tweet Share on Facebook February 2, 2011 Comment (69)Let me see if I have this straight.
According to Glenn Beck, the Egyptian crisis is part of a “coming insurrection” that spans the Mediterranean region of Africa and Southern Europe, and could at some point involve Russia and China. The culprits are an unholy alliance of Weather Underground-type Marxists and radical Islamists (both Shia and Sunni). [See photos of the Egypt protests.]

Healthcare Decision Shows Justice Is Not Just, It's Politics
Tweet Share on Facebook February 2, 2011 Comment (7)I was one of those kids who liked to argue—about anything, with anyone. So my family thought it best that I become a lawyer. They imagined me winning great battles in a courtroom. When I graduated from Northeastern University in Boston, where I hail from, I got a job as a temp at a law firm and decided to embark on a legal career. But that would be short-lived. I didn’t have the funds and already had huge student loans to pay back for my undergraduate degree. But that wasn’t the main reason; in preparing to attend law school, I was disappointed to find the scales of justice aren’t just.

Tweet Share on Facebook February 1, 2011 Comment (3)Federal Judge Roger Vinson’s ruling that the unconstitutionality of the individual mandate that is the cornerstone of Obamacare renders the entire plan “void” requires the proponents of repeal to refocus their strategy in the coming weeks and months.
