Obama Administration Officials in Republican Sights
Tweet Share on Facebook November 19, 2010 Comment (7)If one thing is clear, it is that, with the House of Representatives under Republican control, the oversight of the Obama administration's activities is going to be a lot more vigorous than it has been over the last two years.

Palin, Tea Party Quiet on Joe Miller Power Grab
Tweet Share on Facebook November 19, 2010 Comment (15)Joe Miller, the Alaska Republican Senate nominee who--virtually everyone but him now agrees--lost his bid to Alaska Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski, is starting to resemble the jilted suitor who refuses to get the message. Thursday he asked a federal judge for an injunction preventing the state from certifying Murkowski the winner. He wants a bunch of Murkowski votes tossed out on minor technicalities.
Miller, it seems, is bound and determined to become a U.S. Senator, the will of Alaska voters be damned. And here I thought the Tea Party movement, which gave us Miller, was a response to out of touch pols who refused to listen to the voters. So why aren't Tea Party leaders--especially, their Alaskan godmother, former half-term Gov. Sarah Palin--voicing their outrage at Miller's naked power grab?

End Federal Funding for NPR
Tweet Share on Facebook November 19, 2010 Comment (10)As promised on its “You Cut” website, where ordinary Americans can vote online or by cell phone “on spending cuts that you want to see the House enact,” the House GOP continues to move ahead on ideas to cut spending.

Bruce Springsteen's New Box Set Rocks
Tweet Share on Facebook November 19, 2010 Comment (6)I am not going to purchase the Bruce Springsteen $80 box set of the re-release of Darkness on the Edge of Town. It’s not that I don’t like the Darkness album. I’ve already bought it three times—LP, cassette and CD—and don’t feel the need to donate again to the Springsteen children’s college fund.

The Tea Party's Big Government Misconception
Tweet Share on Facebook November 19, 2010 Comment (4)Responding to my last post, a couple of regular commenters say they have no problem with—I'm paraphrasing here—a federal government that is strong enough to carry out its constitutionally-sanctioned duty of protecting the physical welfare of citizens.
What they don't like is intrusive government.

Obama Should End 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' Himself
Tweet Share on Facebook November 18, 2010 Comment (5)Mr. President. Don’t ask the lame duck session of Congress to end "don't ask, don't tell." Just tell Congress that you’ll do it yourself.

Mitch McConnell Sounding the Right Notes for Conservatives
Tweet Share on Facebook November 18, 2010 Comment (5)Criticized by many conservative bloggers over the last two years as a weak sister for his failure to lead confrontationally, Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, possibly emboldened by the addition of several new members to his caucus, is increasingly sounding the right notes.

Europe Leads the Way on Dealing With Deficits
Tweet Share on Facebook November 18, 2010 Comment (2)Rep. Paul Ryan and American Enterprise Institute president Arthur Brooks recently argued that America faces a choice: "Do we still want our traditional American free enterprise system, or do we prefer a European-style social democracy?" Although the answer appears to be neither as clear nor resounding as I had hoped, it is apparent that Americans believe in our unique approach to governance. Which leads me to present another question: in responding to our debt crisis should we remain content to sit on our hands, or do we follow the lead of Europe and make the difficult choices necessary to reduce our deficit.

Republicans Should Start Respecting the President
Tweet Share on Facebook November 17, 2010 Comment (31)The first power showdown between Republican leaders in Congress and the White House is over what appears to be a relatively petty and insignificant matter: when to have a meeting among President Obama and both GOP and Democratic leaders at the White House to discuss the agenda for the incoming, divided government. But the undercurrent of the dispute is far more serious.

The Return of Death Panels
Tweet Share on Facebook November 17, 2010 Comment (15)Now that healthcare will likely be back on the table, I thought it might be good sport to revive the debate over "death panels." It's a term that upsets some folks, so maybe a different one is in order. How about God Panels? And a question: Will they be comprised primarily of government bureaucrats and journalists?
