Democrats Lost Because of Unemployment, Not Spending
Tweet Share on Facebook November 4, 2010 Comment (15)Tuesday's electoral disaster was not surprising since the best message that Democrats could come up with for the midterms was “voting for us is better than a sharp stick in the eye." Not surprisingly, voters did not flock to our banner. Believe me, I know. As a Democratic strategist and pollster, my specialty is message development and we should have and could have done a lot better.

Obama's Press Conference Shows He Still Doesn't Get It
Tweet Share on Facebook November 4, 2010 Comment (13)History, Mark Twain, reminds us, does not repeat, but it certainly does rhyme. With the congressional elections now over, the nation is finally going to get an answer to the question that has been on many minds this fall. Will Barack Obama, as did Bill Clinton before him, compromise sufficiently with his political opposition after it increased its numbers in Congress two years into his term, to advance the nation’s business and save his presidency? Or will he tighten up the hatches and forge ahead in the direction his gut tells him is best for the nation, public opinion polls and election returns be damned?

The 2010 Elections Over, the Real Barney Frank Returns
Tweet Share on Facebook November 3, 2010 Comment (26)Barney Frank is back.
The 70-year-old Democrat is not just back as a congressman, a title he kept Tuesday night with a convincing victory over GOP nominee Sean Bielat. Frank also made it clear during his victory speech that the irascible, arguably downright cranky person whose wit has both amused and devastated Washington political and media figures for decades is back in the saddle.

Boehner, GOP Need to Bridge the Tea Party-Establishment Gap
Tweet Share on Facebook November 3, 2010 Comment (25)There are a number of votes still to be counted Wednesday morning. Several congressional seats, a U.S. Senate seat or two, and a few down ballot races hang in the balance. “Mighty Casey” did not, as the poem goes, “struck out”--but the GOP experienced some disappointing failures that will inevitably lead to some finger-pointing over the next few days.

2010 Elections Could Have Been Worse for Obama, Democrats
Tweet Share on Facebook November 3, 2010 Comment (24)It could have been worse for the Democrats. Jerry Brown and Barbara Boxer and Harry Reid might have lost. The Senate could have followed the House.

The 2010 Election Returns' Worst News for Obama, Democrats
Tweet Share on Facebook November 3, 2010 Comment (20)The most troubling aspect of yesterday's election was the GOP success in Ohio and Pennsylvania. Democrats lost both governors' races and several House incumbents in each state. Both states also elected new Republican U.S. Senators. Barack Obama won both states in 2008 and needs to win them again to stay in the White House.

Tea Party Anger Trumps Jon Stewart Wit
Tweet Share on Facebook November 3, 2010 Comment (24)The lesson for glum liberals in this election cycle: Jon Stewart ain't the cure for what ails us. Note to selves: democracy's no laughing matter. Note to President Obama: something is rotten in the state of Wisconsin when the Senate's conscience--Russell Feingold, a tragic hero to us--loses on your watch.

Election Returns Are Good for Republicans, Bad for America
Tweet Share on Facebook November 2, 2010 Comment (17)Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord more Dem House seats to keep. If I should die before I wake, I pray the state of Cali for Barbara and Jerry to take!

Christine O'Donnell, Disconnected From Reality to the End
Tweet Share on Facebook November 2, 2010 Comment (12)Christine O’Donnell might have convinced us that the whole dabbling in witchcraft thing was just schoolgirl fun. And the diatribe against masturbation? Could be that it was just the naïve musings of a young woman still not comfortable with the world of sex. And maybe those creepy campaign ads--the ones with the cauldron-esque mist rising behind her as she reassured us that, "I’m not a witch. I’m you"--perhaps one could blame those on the bad advice of a third-tier campaign advisory team.

Senior Citizens vs. the Tea Party Will Be a GOP Problem
Tweet Share on Facebook November 2, 2010 Comment (4)According to CNN exit-polling data, senior citizens broke big for Republicans this year.
This is the snake lurking in the grass of the GOP's new majority: If their electoral triumph was predicated on seniors' disgruntlement with Obamacare--which takes money out of their Medicare dollars out of their pocket and gives it to other, younger voters--that's hugely problematic for any hope of entitlement reform.
