The Mean Spirits From the Clarence Thomas Hearings Never Left
Tweet Share on Facebook October 26, 2010 Comment (10)Virginia Lamp Thomas stirred the boiling cauldron of national memory from 19 Novembers ago, with on-cue Halloween timing. The wife of Clarence Thomas, a member of the Supreme Court, called up Anita Hill, unbidden, and demanded an apology for "what you did you my husband." That's a lot like the wife of a Salem witch trial judge asking an apology from a young woman drowned in the town duck pond.

Report: $2.4 Trillion in New Tax Hikes Coming
Tweet Share on Facebook October 25, 2010 Comment (42)It’s not enough that the Obama tax increases are heading down the rails like a freight train with a full head of steam. The so-called Bowles-Simpson Deficit Reduction Commission has a proposal for another $2.4 trillion coming in line once the elections are over.

Big Labor's Big Mistake in the 2010 Elections
Tweet Share on Facebook October 22, 2010 Comment (59)“As the political season heats up, Americans are already being inundated with the usual phone calls, mailings, and TV ads from campaigns all across the country. But this summer, they’re also seeing a flood of attack ads run by shadowy groups with harmless-sounding names. We don’t know who’s behind these ads and we don’t know who’s paying for them,” the president said in his weekly address a few weeks ago, complaining about the Supreme Court’s ruling in the Citizens United case. That case allowed corporations and unions to use their own funds to pay for political ads. The Democrats have been screaming about the “floodgates” opening on corporate money ever since, but there hasn’t been a peep about the unions. Until now.

There's Water on the Moon, Believe It or Not
Tweet Share on Facebook October 22, 2010 Comment (22)The morning papers tell a nifty tale about American science and ingenuity which, though it fails to impress the Tea Party Republicans, continues to set a standard for the world.

Jarring Changes for NFL Hits and Washington Debt
Tweet Share on Facebook October 22, 2010 Comment (5)Changing a culture takes time.
The NFL is about to find that out the hard way. The impetus for the change was an especially violent weekend in football. Rutgers’s player Eric LeGrand was paralyzed from the neck down after a vicious hit on a kickoff return. Several NFL players, including Eagles star wide receiver DeSean Jackson, were injured after bone-rattling hits.

NPR Shouldn't Have Fired Juan Williams, But Its CEO Instead
Tweet Share on Facebook October 22, 2010 Comment (40)I’m going to go out on a limb here, and I hope U.S. News will not give me the boot for expressing a clear opinion, but I think Vivian Schiller should be fired. You remember her. She’s the CEO of NPR, the one who suggested very publicly--to a room full of journalists and television cameras--that Juan Williams, the Fox News and (now former) NPR commentator might be, at worst, a little mentally unstable and, at best, lacking journalistic ethics. (With particularly NPR-ish irony, Schiller says she fired Williams for saying offensive things, by the way.)

GOP Mud-Slinging in Massachusetts May Alienate Women Voters
Tweet Share on Facebook October 22, 2010 Comment (19)There’s a very dangerous game being played in the campaign for Massachusetts’s 10th District congressional seat (from which Democratic Rep. Bill Delahunt is retiring). And the results could have implications for candidates for higher office as female voters assess GOP candidates’ reactions to the handling of a sexual assault case in the 1990s.

The Thomas, Williams, and O'Donnell Stories are Beside the Point
Tweet Share on Facebook October 22, 2010 Comment (11)Why Virginia Thomas called Anita Hill after 19 years is anyone’s guess. She’ll never get the apology she wants. What’s clear from this week’s revelations is that opinions on the matter have changed little over time, and this revelation is merely a distraction that reminds us how far apart we really are.

5 Reasons Why Branding Muslims as America’s Enemies Is Dumb
Tweet Share on Facebook October 22, 2010 Comment (16)Here is a short list of reasons why it is dumb, despite what Fox News will tell you, for Americans of other faiths to brand Muslims, and especially Muslim-Americans, as fearsome potential enemies.

Clarence Thomas Is the One Who Should Apologize, Not Anita Hill
Tweet Share on Facebook October 22, 2010 Comment (30)Since none of Ginny Thomas’s friends have stepped up, I’ll say it: Sister, whatever it was that set you off, it’s time to take your business out of the street and talk to your man. He's the one with the answers you seek. On the one hand you have to admire Thomas’s ability to remain so steadfast in her denial for more than 20 years. On the other hand, placing that call at 7:30 a.m. on a Saturday morning, seemingly out of the blue, suggests that something or someone is threatening to shatter her state of denial.
