A new Gallup poll is out that finds almost no difference between mainstream American Catholics and non-Catholics when it comes to deciding the moral acceptability of abortion (a majority of both say no) and embryonic stem cell research (a majority of both say yes).

Obama's Poll Numbers Remain Strong, But Auto Bailout Could Be a Problem

President Obama got more good news in various polls today, with some troubling signs sprinkled in.
The president remains strong in the new Washington Post-ABC News poll, with 66 percent approving of his job performance (down marginally from 68 percent in February); 60 percent approve of his handling of the economy, which is the same as last month.
Rasmussen's daily tracking "Approval Index" (the number of people who strongly approve less the number of people who strongly disapprove) has Obama at +11, the highest it has been since the first week of March.

Have you seen The Fox Nation, Fox News Channel's new opinion site, yet? Intrigued by this Hot Air post, I wandered over and checked it out. I wonder if it isn't a giant put-on by The Onion—Fox has officially entered the realm of self-parody.

When ER ends a 15-year run on NBC this week, to all the well-deserved bells and whistles for having survived, for so long, as a part of American culture, I won't be part of the celebration.

The Obama-Notre Dame Controversy Is Just Hysteria of a Catholic Right-Wing Fringe

The Liberal Media Display Their Childish, Boorish Side on the Secret JournoList

Last week, Mickey Kaus exposed some postings on JournoList, the by-invitation-only website for certain young left-wing political writers. I'm glad I haven't gotten an invitation. Many of these writers produce thoughtful and intelligent pieces in print and in online venues available to the general public. But the pieces Kaus presents are childish and boorish. These guys would make better use of their time writing for everyone rather than trying to bully and badmouth each other into taking a party line on issues, which seems to be JournoList's purpose. Not all new ideas are good ones.

My TJS colleague Mary Kate Cary refers us to an interesting Christian Science Monitor opinion piece by her former Bush #41 speechwriting colleague, Mark Lange, who proposes that women might do better running the world than men:

Am I the Last Capitalist? Obama Falters on Rick Wagoner, GM, and the Auto Industry

It's French Revolution time. The White House put General Motors CEO Richard Wagoner's head on the guillotine this morning, when it required his resignation as a condition for further bailout money. Buried in the coverage was the fact that technically Wagoner will have to stay on board at his $1-a-year salary, because if he really resigned he'd be paid millions in severance under the terms of his contract, which the White House doesn't want either. Even the Washington Post called the move "an extraordinary intervention of the federal government into the management of a private company." The stock market dropped about 300 points as a result, ending its rally.

Conservatives Are Making the Wrong Argument on GM and Rick Wagoner

Reading through some of the conservative blog-reactions to the announcement that the administration has decapitated General Motors while giving both GM and Chrysler a firm deadline, it strikes me that they are still stuck on the last auto debate—whether to bail out the automakers at all.
Once we cleared that hurdle, the administration's actions are broadly sensible (though it's still not clear whether that's true in the particulars).
