We may still be a divided nation on abortion, but a new survey by the YWCA in conjunction with the National Women's Law Center shows we're less divided than one might expect on issues such as contraception, access to it for low-income Americans, and on sex education.

The Obama Gift to the Chicago Political Machine and Mayor Daley: Ray LaHood

Rick Moran spotlights one of the under-covered stories of the incoming Obama administration: O'Hare Airport. I don't take as dim a view as Moran does of Mayor Richard M. Daley's project of expanding O'Hare from four to eight runways and building a new terminal on the west side of the airport. It seems to me that Daley is acting in the spirit of his father.

The Obama Lobbyist Ban and Tom Daschle: the Silliness Continues

Let's be clear: Tom Daschle is not a lobbyist. Which is good, because the Obama administration does not employ lobbyists (mostly).
A lobbyist, you see, uses his special insider knowledge, connections, and status to turn a buck and help special interests. Oh, and a lobbyist also has to file a paper certifying that (s)he is a lobbyist. This is a huge difference from what Tom Daschle has been doing the last four years, right?

Rush Limbaugh Dooms the Republican Party, but Michael Steele Could Save It

The Republican Party is at a fork in the road. And the events of the past 10 days have propelled two of its leaders into prominent positions as it gets ready to choose its way. Each of these men exemplifies a direction that the party can take.On one side of the road stands Michael Steele, the newly elected party chairman, who is charismatic, conservative, media savvy, and, incidentally, a person of color. On the other side of the road stands Rush Limbaugh, a crude and mean-spirited individual who gets rich by playing to base fears and likes to joke about "negroes."

Obama, SNL, and the Stimulus: Skewering Dooms Intemperate Democrat Pork Package

Two hundred and twenty-one years ago, the writer of Federalist Paper No. 62—historians still argue whether it was Hamilton or Madison—warned Americans of the propensity of the House "to yield to the impulse of sudden and violent passions, and to be seduced by factious leaders into intemperate and pernicious resolutions." The House's passing of the $819 billion stimulus bill this week was all that: impulsive, sudden, violent, intemperate, and pernicious.

Republican Party Won't Revive Under Michael Steele

The Republican Party's selection of former Md. Lieutenant Governor Michael Steele as party chief is almost as historic as the Democrats' nomination of Barack Obama as the party's presidential candidate (not his election, just his nomination). But unlike President Obama, who has served to draw many independents and even a smattering of Democrats into the fold and who broadened the Democrats' membership and popularity, my guess is Steele will do little or nothing of the same for the GOP.
