tripletma: I think you're combining two separate points the author was making. The first is that solar has been around, and researched, longer than most people think. The other is that solar receives larger subsidies for its output than other sources. He wasn't saying (or even implying) that solar power has historically received more funding.
fett and tripletma: If we can put partisan politics aside for a minute, this is actually a very unbiased article that we should all agree on. The infographic clearly shows that wind is a much more viable alternative energy source than solar. The point of the article is that we're betting on the wrong horse (solar), and it's costing us billions.
Democrats shouldn't be afraid to criticize a democrat in office, or we lose accountability. Environmentalists shouldn't be afraid to eschew inefficient alternatives, or it just takes longer to make the good ones viable.

I would love to know what the TOTAL amount of subsidies for nuclear, coal, oil, etc... are - counting the last 100 years or so.... It doesn't seem fair to compare what the subsidies that they get now to what solar is getting. You can say that it has been around forever, but not in any noticeable capacity.
