Deal to Double Fuel Economy Standards a Bright Spot for Obama

The government can force the auto companies to build these cars, but will the public buy them? I believe that the administration claims these cars will save about $8000 per car over their lifetime due to lower fuel consumption. I read an article in Motor Trend suggesting that it will cost $6700 (not including increased sales tax due to higher purchase price) per vehicle to meet these new standards.

So the customer needs to shell out $7000 upfront to get long term savings of $8000. I think a lot of consumers will balk at that. Personally I wonder how I will be able to fit my 6'5" frame into one of the new much smaller cars.
