DENVER—Bill Clinton just gave a rousing speech at the Democratic National Convention. He entered the stage to several minutes of cheering and went 10.33 minutes over his allotted time (I lost my office competition, I guessed he'd go 7 minutes over). Plenty will be written on the substance of the speech later, but someone who apparently doesn't have a keen sense of irony chose to play him off the stage with "Addicted to Love" by Robert Palmer.

Robert Sandy -- Yes, they played Beautiful Day for a few moments, and then switched to Addicted to Love. Really. I couldn't believe it.

I can't help but wonder: the Clintons were scheduled to be at Obama's acceptance speech the next day, and I didn't see them there. Did anyone? Could that have been a reaction to the insult of "Addicted to Love"?

They played "Beautiful Day" as he walked off, but it was immediately followed by "Addicted to Love." Was it my imagination or did they cut the song off right when the refrain was about to hit? As if someone noticed at the last minute the irony of it all.

They played a minute of a TERRIBLE version of "Beautiful Day" by U2 at the conclusion, but then went into a lengthy version of Addicted to Love. I noticed it and thought it was hilarious.

BTW, on Tuesday night, they played "Chain of Fools" after Tom Daschle's speech. That couldn't have been unintentional either.
